“Remember that time in Montreal 92 when I threw a strop after you nearly barbecued yourself and a riot happened? Good times”

On This Day in 1946: the late AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott was born in Forfar. He spent the first 6 years of his life in Kirriemuir, before his family moved to Australia. This brilliant statue, by John McKenna, was unveiled in his home town in 2016. Kirriemuir also has an international rock festival ‘Bonfest’ every year in his honour.

I went to see Stevie Wonder last night at Hyde Park, cracking gig, as you’d expect from Mr Wonder.

Ezra Collective were main support, I didn’t know a lot about them other than a few highlights on BBC’s Glastonbury coverage. They are awesome, brought a massive amount of energy.

Was supposed to see ELO and the Doobie Brothers tonight but the gig has been cancelled due to Jeff Lynne’s illness.

Life eh…

Lime Street, Liverpool, 5th May, 1958, with Quarrymen manager and occasional tea-chest bassist Nigel Walley. A couple of months later, ‘Wallogs’ - as John called him - would be the last person to talk with Julia Lennon mere moments before her death.

“I went to call for John that evening but his Aunt Mimi told me he was out,” Nige would recall. "Mimi was at the gate with John’s mum, who was about to leave. We stood chatting and John’s mum said, ‘Well, you have the privilege of escorting me to the bus stop!’ I said, ‘That will do me fine. I’ll be happy to do that.’

"We walked down Menlove Avenue and I turned off to go up Vale Road, where I lived. I must have been about 15 yards up the road when I heard a car skidding. I turned 'round to see John’s mum going through the air. I rushed over but she had been killed instantly… It wasn’t a gory mess, but she must have had severe internal injuries… I can still see her gingery hair fluttering in the breeze, blowing across her face.

“I didn’t see John much after that because he became a bit of a recluse. It worried me because, deep down, I wondered whether he blamed me for the accident and was thinking ‘If only Nigel Walley had stayed a minute longer talking to my mum’. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.”

Here’s a recent video interview with Nigel Walley (who remained in touch with John for the rest of his life):

Very touching interview with Alex Van Halen about Eddie’s last days and his passing (I’m a huge Van Halen fan)

I noticed this story about Metallica helping out the Tomorrowland dance music festival in Belgium, at short notice, after their stage was destroyed by fire. It’s always nice to see artists helping each other out like this, particularly when they are quite cross-genre.

Lars might be a questionable drummer but Metallica generally are nice guys.

Every time I see or hear the name Metallica, I’m reminded of The Big Lebowski.

I was actually listening to Technical Ecstasy for the first time in years yesterday. It’s a far better album than I ever remember. She’s Gone is actually an excellent ballad.

I’m going to listen to the No More Tears album now.

Safe journey, you crazy bugger.

The man who was instrumental in creating virtually all the music that couldn’t live without. Rest in peace, Ozzy.

The Ultimate Sin (album), No Rest for the Wicked (album) are my favourites by him. He had the penchant of picking amazing guitarists.

Glad he got to say goodbye properly

I wonder if he knew he was dying when they put that concert on two weeks ago?

Who knows, maybe he was worse off than they knew. When he sang “Mama I’m coming home” (written by another legend Lemmy)…you just knew it was the last time. Not a dry eye in the stadium.

I always remember Ozzy being on the Tommy Vance Friday Night Rock Show. Brilliant stories, although he was as mad as you imagined.

He said that when he first played Donnington, he wasn’t sure about common practice at these festivals. He said someone threw a plastic bottle of lager on stage, so he gave the guy the thumbs up and took a swig…

It wasn’t lager.

Last post on this. I was watching repeats of Beat Club, the German music show from the 1960s and 70s.

Sabbath played the same Hamburg circuit as the Beatles did and were invited on right at the beginning. This performance is from early 1970:
