Yeah, I’m a big fan of Willie, Gillian and Dave. Saw them in concert together maybe 4 years ago and they were incredible. Also got to chat with Willie outside the venue for a bit, and he’s a super nice dude. Dave Rawlings is up there with my favorite guitarists. Dude just makes good harmonic choices on the guitar and his cross-picking and dissonance use is insane.
For they knew not the words of the Free States’ refrain
It said:
“I believe in the power of good
I believe in the state of love
I will fight for the right to be right
I will kill for the good of the fight for the right to be right”
Here’s four total weirdo’s with their tribute to Bowie. From a technical and composition perspective all four members of this band are Jedi level talented, but damn do they make music that is both technically impressive and completely unlistenable at times. They must get a good kick out of that. In the same piece of music they’ll have moments that are beautiful and funky then they play stuff that just make you want to rip your ears from your head.
I sort of love it, but I’m convinced this has all been just a 30 year joke being played on their audience.
Loved it thanks, but like a mezze, couldn’t finish the whole platter! Starts like Station to Station.
Edit: managed to finish it, and can see why you think its a joke but seems like a masterpiece tribute to me. They’re too good to be that sardonic, and the execution was AA+.
I always think of Phish the same way I think of Zappa. Genius super talents who have stuff I absolutely love and some stuff that I couldn’t run away from fast enough.
Best band in the world and worst band in the world sometimes in the same set. But that is a pretty killer version of David Bowie.
Yes I hear that vibe; mentioning Zappa I remember spending fortunes on Filmore East and We’re only in it for the money and thinking, is he taking the piss, really? But then Frank, when he wants to be is the untouchable best for me. A whole other level of playing.
Thought some of Anastasio’s heavier playing was really good, but not when he was pretending to have flat wounds. That just didnt work for me.
I cannot leave you guys anything better than this for Christmas, but it at least surely sounds better in the spring to me. “there is no hell, and there is no shame” - Bountiful gifts.
Quick question what is the difference between buying an album that was the original or a remastered version? Why is the remastered version more expensive?
It’s very annoying, isn’t it? A trend started, perhaps, by Paul McCartney going back and reconsidering Let It Be, which may well have needed an earlift after what Phil Spector did to it. Basically, someone, usually the original artist, goes back to the master tapes and makes a new mix of the tracks. Supposedly, their taste and ear have gotten better over time, but I’ve always been a bit mystified how some of my favorite bits disappear in the remaster. Maybe sometimes it gets better, but I also don’t like how they then add a bunch of tracks that were too crap to put on the original album. I know I’m venting. Then they make you pay more? That’s new to me because I only stream now.**
