@Nikola , time for TAN playlist mk2 ?

Anyone seen any good Glasto sets?

Enjoyed Paul McCartney last night and Kendrick Lemar tonight. Billie eilish was good too. TLC were good for a bit of old school fun.

Agree to disagree….

If I want lyrics I’m straight to Dylans Idiot Wind or Positively 4th St etc. but when I want a singalong Noel comes up with some good shit.

And like Liam, so many rock stars are flawed in many ways.

Have seen a few of the docos. Agree they are hilarious and worth watching.

So it’s now back to Liam’s new album. Fantastic.

I love the Beatles and McCartney and considering he’s 80 I’ll give him his dues (I’ll probably get shot for saying this) but i thought his set at Glastonbury was poor.

The sound was terrible or maybe it was to mask his voice going (if not gone trying to sing some songs),it sounded like the instruments were turned up high to drown out his vocals, which only seemed to be strong when the rest of the band sang along with him and harmonised in the choruses.

Maybe its the oldskool Beatles fan in me aswell and i know he’s more than just that but i wasn’t too impressed with his song selection either,i’d expect
1 or 2 new songs but i didn’t know half of the set,it was like he was trying to plug recent or new albums.

As for Kendrick Lamar,WTF is that all about,i know of him but never got into him and tbh after watching that set at Glastonbury,if thats the best rapper out there today, rap really is dead cos he was shite,he may be about messages but fuck me what a depressing cunt and none of the tracks had a good beat or lyrical flow to get into, the guy doesn’t come close to a 2 Pac or Biggie.

Rant over

Didn’t see his set at Glasto, but I have heard Kendrick is 50/50 live. His records are excellent.

They were excellent.
Also enjoyed Years and Years yesterday.

I thought the mix was pretty much spot on: about half Beatles, third Wingspan and the rest from the rest of his career with a couple of covers. He did a couple of songs that John and George wrote but he mainly does his own catalogue. Remember that he is 80 and his voice isn’t what it was; there will be some songs that he just can’t do any more. However, I did catch the Robert Plant / Alison Krauss set earlier and he is in the same boat - now into his 70s and with a voice very different from the teenager that joined Led Zeppelin. His approach is (and always has been ) to alter and rearrange the songs to suit how his voice is now. It worked very well. McCartney tends to stick to his original arrangements which, as someone who is primarily a songwriter, makes sense.

Anyway, I loved the McCartney show even if it was 2:30 in the morning by the time I got to bed. 3 hours for an 80 year old? That vegetarian diet must be doing him some good!

In bed with a bug all weekend so watched most of it. This was the highlight for me. I quite liked him before but this set blew me away. Great playing, social conscience in the lyrics without being preachy, and loads of emotion on stage and in the crowd. Channeling a young Springsteen here…and I don’t say that lightly

I watched the Foals set. I’ve never seen them before but I was quite impressed. Enjoyed them a lot.

Interesting to see how Glastonbury is changing, becoming much more of a pop music festival than it was before. I think that is probably a good thing as it helps opens it up to a wider group of people. Seems to be a lot more focus on the performance side of things, huge stage installations and choreography even from artists lower down the billing. When I first went in 2003 no one made any effort like that!

The bit I don’t like so much is the number of artists relying on pre-recorded music, I just don’t find it near as engaging as watching the music being created live. I mean it’s supposed to be ‘Live Music’ after-all!

I was a big fan of their first album. We flicked between the Foals and Billie on Friday night as they were on at the same time.

Agreed, I totally resent paying £80+ for gigs knowing that most of what I’m hearing is backing track. Had a friend who was in Coldplay crew and said that’s all you hear. They actually put intentional mistakes into set to make it seem real

Yea it’s pretty shocking from bands like Coldplay who could easily afford to hire the best session musicians to help reproduce the sound on stage. I was referring to the guys doing it openly like Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar of the headliners, there’s just an acceptance that pop and hip-hop acts won’t have musicians on stage but I think it come across as naff when they’re performing to 100,000 odd people! Even worse though when a band like Coldplay are duping their audience with a low level backing track, or possibly not so low level! No excuse for it.

The whole thing seems completely normalised now, I’ve seen youngsters in bands at small venues playing along to pre-recorded drums, synth and harmonies. I get the appeal of the bigger sound, but I don’t think it’s worth the price of authenticity.

Agreed. Others like Sam Fender and even George Ezra had massive bands to get that big sound. Much more expensive for them, but more authentic as you say

Watching Sir Paul now. Pretty good for an 80 year old.

Foals, Sam Fender and Arlo Parks all look good. Definitely want to catch PSB and Primal Scream for a singalong and Jarvis is always worth checking out.

Watching PC now, incredible for 80! Also…watched Elbow twice now, cried both times!
