We, along with other groups involved in flags, will be removing our flags from The Kop. We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above integrity of the game. - Spion Kop 1906
Good on them for for that, but I think their moral awakening has happened 30 years too late.
No, but then I did see an upgraded stadium, a Champions League trophy parade, the Premier League trophy presentation and a brand spanking new, state of the art training facility.
But then, what have the Romans ever done for usā¦
They (and others) campaigned against Hicks and Gilette, the raising of season ticket prices, furlough of staff etcā¦with some success.
Better than the ambivalence and snobbery of some comments here
Thatās one thing, but complaining about āgreedā? Seriously what do they think football has been for thirty years?
Yes and this is the culmination of that. Are you saying they/we should just roll over and accept it?
Weāre sitting in 6th. Arsenal are a shambles. Spurs have won nothing in decades. Yet weāre colluding with them to create a protected elite so our billionaire owners can get richer
This isnāt the slam dunk you think it is.
Greed!!! We spend fucking 300+ millions in wages.
The only argument for the ESL seems to be people saying thereās already greed in football so who cares.
The greed has got us to this horrible place. Top teams lose millions per year because of increasing wages. Solution is proper regulation, wage caps, sharing money aroundā¦not creating a billionaires paradise
are designed to ensure that the ownership reaps the rewards, rather than the labor
I wasnāt really thinking it was a slam dunk.
Iām no scouser, and yet, Iām dead set against the idea of that super leagueā¦
The least thing an average LFC fan can do is try and read up and actually understand the issue.
Not listen to Sky
Not listen to fvcking Gary Neville.
Not listen to the ignorant Jamie Carragher.
Read and understand the subject.
So you donāt think there was any thought by the ownership that increased revenue that is locked in so to speak by being a founding member would enable us to be more competitive on the field and deliver better fixtures and by extension a greater more entertaining spectacle to the fans.
Were in a time of very low revenue bu normal standards. This move could also be seen as a means of stabilizing our income and ensuring the financial future of the club on our own terms rather than at the behest of Eufa.
Iām against the ESL just btw, certainly in the guise they are suggesting but I think a compromise will be reached and this is just brinkmanship. Eufa will end up giving in. They will work out that a smaller piece of the pie is better than none at all.
What lack of meritocracy?
The last UCL participants from the EPL has been from among the top six teams in the last 11 years. Only exception being Leicester.
These same teams all have to compete to win the PL. ALL of them.
Unless someone shows me that nobody will be interested in winning the PLā¦
Think the issue I have is that a team like Leicester could have an amazing season and win the League like a few years back and not be automatically rewarded with European football. Thats not fair in my book and it should be the top club comp not some second rate comp with the leftovers who dont go across to the ESL.
Im also seriously concerned about games like tomorrow at Leeds. How hard would we be going out to win that game if we werenāt playing for a spot in Europe. We could end up with a lot of dead rubber games in the league. The current qualification system makes every game massive. I watched the Newcastle West Ham game and was losing the plot when they showed 8 mins of injury time. I was begging Newcastle to hang on for us.
All of that is gone under this new scenario.
And like others have said playing the same teams every season kills the romance of the CL drawā¦awwww we got Barca Bayern whoever itās what makes those European nights so special because they dont come around every year.
The FSG message interally;
Dear Colleagues,
You will be aware of the announcement published late last night regarding Europeās leading football Clubs coming together to establish a new mid-week competition, the European Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.
Itās important as a member of our team that I share with you some of the context.
For quite some time now, Clubs, including our own, have held numerous longstanding concerns about not only the future of European football but also the way football is run by UEFA. The global pandemic has also accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model.
We have therefore joined AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur as Founding Clubs of the Super League. It is anticipated that a further three Clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.
The Super League will be the future of European football and if we want to continue our journey of being a sustainable Club with ambition to grow and continue winning trophies then we should absolutely be part of that process and have a seat at the table rather than outside that group.
The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues. These solidarity payments are expected to be roughly three times what is currently achieved from UEFA competitions. One of the core commitments of the European Super League is to vastly increase financial support for the football pyramid.
After the start of the menās competition, a corresponding womenās league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the womenās game.
We know that this announcement has provoked strong feelings within the game and elsewhere but we believe this decision is in the best long-term interests of Liverpool Football Club.
Importantly, this is the beginning of the journey and we can now start an engagement process with you, supporters and key stakeholders to help shape this process in the right way.
There is still much more information to come in due course.
I will keep you updated as we progress on this journey and discuss further on our Town Hall tomorrow.
Thank you for your continued support.
Uncapped solidarity payments to the less priviliged ones who will have no chance to participate in their private competition.
How magnaminous of them.
IF a team like Leicester wins the league, they would most probably be in the ESL via the 2nd window.
In theory, Leicester could win the league, and they have done it before. But how many times does this likelihood happen?
Too much is being made about the impact on games such as the Leeds game.
I do not see any of the mid-table teams that are safe whiffing on games. Not a single scintilla of evidence of that.
Yet somehow the Leeds game is cited as an exampleā¦
Letās have this debate be based on reality, not the imagination of uninformed punditsā¦
How many of them compete in the CL atm?
You think the owners of Bradford will sniff at improved payments?
