The Run In Thread

Chelsea have the win the CL trump card.

Another important question:

Same points and same goal difference.

What would be the next criteria in the PL - goals scored or head to head?

Think we have beaten both Chelsea and Leicester in the head to head this season.

LC vs Tottenham will be juicy if we actually win our next 3 games.

We’d necessarily have overhauled their +3 GD if the results go as required for us to both be on 66 points on the final day. At worst we’d be on +21 and at best they’d be +20.

LC vs Tot and Aston Villa vs Chelsea, not that easy, it would be amazing if it was at least in our hands vs CP, with Fans?

If we win the next two, the pressure will be on them and it’ll be a very important factor as well. Let’s become the mentality monsters we were known for, for the next four games please!

I would like to overhaul LC just based on the way they celebrated at OT after they won like it was a final. Nah, fuck em.

I we had won against Newcastle and Leeds when we really needed to, then we wouldn’t have to be watching and caring about other teams. Our destiny would be in our own hands.

Anyway, we could still finish third if Leicester draw their last two games and Chelsea get 4 points from theirs and we win our last four. We’d be on 69, with Leicester and Chelsea one point behind and Leicester losing out on GD.

A big ask, of course. Think I’ll drag my arse out of bed for the 2nd half at OT. Could be an excruciating way to start the day.

It already is now. They can’t both finish on more than 69 points so we can match or beat at least one of them on points at which point it’s goal difference and we’ve got plenty of opportunity to increase that. It’s now, once again, all on us. We are actually, maybe surprisingly, one of the form sides. Can we see it over the line?

We’re second in the form table, which is frankly mad.

GD may be important if LC are the losers from their match with Chelsea. They will be -1 at best at that point and we’d be +3 at worst of we win the next 3 on the trot. We would have the superior GD going into MW38 but LC could still make top 4 of they spanked Spurs. Im unsure of the term “in our own hands” when another team can leapfrog on GD.

My point was that now we are reliant on others dropping points, but if we had those points that we dropped then we wouldn’t be reliant on other teams. In fact, in that scenario we could theoretically finish second.

More than Leeds, the Newcastle game hurts a lot. So many chances to put the game beyond doubt, yet we ended up with the same obvious ending many were predicting.

It’s in out hands. Even in that situation we are a minimum of 2 goals ahead of Leicester and they’d have to outscore us on the final day by at least 2 goals maybe more. Chelsea are on 64 with two games left, maximum they can pick up is 70, if they do that Leicester can pick up a maximum of 69. If Chelsea don’t beat Leicester the maximum they can pick up is 68. We can pick up 69 and if we do so should be in a good position to finish higher than Leicester on goal difference. Its in our hands and we’ve been OK recently but we’ve had slippy hands all season. Just got to believe we can win our remaining fixtures to keep it in out hands. If we don’t we might actually still finish top 4 if one or the other drop points in the right games.

I want to just get through the next 12 hours unscathed, and by unscathed I mean taking 3 points at OT which, on our record there, will be a tough ask.

I love all the permutations of how this might be doable. If we win our next four, it certainly is. There’s an outside chance of finishing top four even if we don’t win tonight, but it does get that much more difficult.

So in a crusty old fan sort of way, it’s time to wheel out the mantra, “one game at a time.”

Winning at Old Trafford has proven beyond us for 6-7 years, even with stronger teams than we can put out now, and even with the gap between the sides being well in our favour in previous seasons.

So on the face of it, this is a tough assignment.

Time to stand up and be counted Liverpool! Leaving work early to watch this with my lad. Get in!

The other side of this coin is how defensive and negative they’ve been against us because we were seen as the better side. Maybe they could open up and be more attacking this time?

We win tonight and both Chelsea and leicester will shit their pants.

Good point on Man Utd being more inclined to play properly tonight. They will look at our defense and think they can have a good time with their pace and strikers.

So instead of a cagey affair, maybe this one will have a few goals? At which point, I hope our strikers have their shooting boots on!
