This is just in 2022 mind you. People have been falling out of windows for a while in Russia. It’s a common way to die if you happen to be someone important who says stuff you should not say.
I’m wondering right now why the EU (and the UK) don’t seem to have planned for weaponisation of oil and gas supplies, did they really think that Putin wouldn’t try to use it against them someday?
The UK isn’t reliant on Russian oil and gas. At all. The problem for the UK is the knock on effect of those countries who are massively reliant on Russian energy now having to enter the global energy market (including oil and gas from Norway, for example) where the UK gets its energy from, thus driving up prices globally. The UK frequently warned Germany and others against an over reliance on Russian energy but those warnings weren’t heeded. Ostpolitik.
It’s still an effect. You’re telling me that Cameron wasn’t misguided in killing the incentives for renewable, which could have been a cornerstone of an energy independence strategy?
Russia was always going to weaponise energy it was unavoidable. Just goes to show what a pariah state will do with control over a major world resource. Russia believes itself to be a superpower, when it unquestionably is not. It just happens to have WMD. Therefore a major problem presents itself; how does the world change the Russian regime.
We think we’re laughing at Putin when he claims his ‘special military operation’ is on course to deliver its objectives, as we think its all about Ukraine. It really is not; Ukraine is a vehicle by which Russia can weaponise gas and hope to tank the western oligarchy. This is his real objective; he’s laughing at us laughing at him.
