Russian gains today seem to have come mainly along the eastern axis, which is somewhat odd considering they only have about 5000 meters to close the pocket. That in turn suggests the Ukrainian forces are conducting a fighting withdrawal.

They are according to the sources I read, but a very slow one. The danger is that it may be too slow, but for now, “all is good” (not really, when UA lose 1-2 companies per day and 1 batallion per week according to commander Magyar. But the assumption is that RU losses are higher. Even so, their manpower reserves are much greater, so it is rough.

@Arminius Note that they are even now reinforcing Bakhmut with batallions. I don’t know. I hope for the best. Not so sure they are in total control.

I often struggle with the idea of Russians being brainwashed … and then I see something like this and can think of no other explanation really.
