The Russian Invasion of Ukraine (Part 2)

I do wonder how long the Trump world will last though. There does appear to be a dynasty in waiting and if Trump senior is perceived to make a “success” of his term will the next Trump be a shoe in? Scarey thought…but could conceivably be another 12 years.

He has aspirations for a dynasty, for sure. And even if that didn’t happen, once Trump goes, Trumpism and MAGA remain. It is a concerning time.

I’m thinking it’s just one more thing that Putin whispered into Trump’s ear.

It doesn’t matter. This administration has no respect for treaties, agreements and norms.

If a country invokes the article, the US will not honour its obligations.

Under Trump’s ideals, much of the SW United States should be long to Mexico. The land was stolen from the people who lived there and they were forced into shitty land reservations which held no value. Much of the population of these area are Hispanic.

Maybe New Mexico and everything south/west of it should become exactly that!!!

No thanks. We paid 15 million for that land to Mexico. It belongs to the USA.

So, within the next twenty-thirty, maybe fifty years. The key is to stop buying US weapons , and to produce our own. But that can’t be done overnight. A whole industry needs to be built up almost from scratch.

Trump wants us to go at 5% from our GDP, and to sell us his weapons. I’d never accept that. The US are totally unreliable by now, and might well become our enemies at some point. Buying US weapons only prolongs the state of infeodation and dependence. All that huge money must be used to build up a credible European defence, and not to enrich the US.

‘paid’. Yes, I suppose the Gadsden Purchase was that, sort of the way parts of Poland were legally transferred to Russia in 1946.

The vast majority of US land that was formerly Mexican was taken as a spoil of war. The portion that was later acquired as part of the Gadsen Purchase is shown in yellow
image

Importantly, the period in between the end of the war and the purchase saw the territory under continued military incursion from/by the US with the Mexican government increasingly coming to terms with the fact that the peace treaty was no such thing, were tiring of having to defend against incursions and accepted selling it now was better than having it, and more, taken by force in the near future. It wasnt exactly a transaction made of free will.

Shouldn’t we change the title to Russian and American War Crimes?

Russian and American Assholes has more of a ring to it.

And again, European countries do have nukes. They only work as a deterrence against the enemy using nukes. They don’t work when countries attack the other using conventional arms unless you are advocating becoming a rogue nation like Pakistan with its nuclear weapons doctrine.

I can’t believe you , a normally sensible poster , are advocating for a nuclear arms race.

or Russian Arseholes & Their American Lapdogs

And a nuclear arms race with Russia(or any other country) is futile. Russia has enough nukes with them to decimate Europe totally.

Merge both the war crimes thread into one while at it. Both the “superpowers” have shown that they are nothing but that.

There is zero shock in this,

Trump got elected over 3 months ago. I stated then that it was imperative that Europe stepped up immediately. That there was a small window. That all the leaders needed to meet (led by UK/France). We are only seeing it now…when it is far too late. The European politicians should hang their head in shame. The time for action was months ago. Not when the US/Russia is carving up Ukraine.

The only option for Europe now is to play hardball with the US. Walk away from Ukraine and the US damages its relationship with Europe. But that would require backbone. Not something I think we have.

From a more simplistic perspective, Trump and Putler are bullies. Bullies respond to and are cowed by strength.

To continue this simplistic perspective. So are Xi and if given the chance Modi.

The point is that the rest of the world doesn’t have enough strength to challenge them. Not without taking support from the other bully or bullies
