The Russian Invasion of Ukraine (Part 2)

Since Russia invaded, the EU has now sent enough money to Russia for energy as it costs Russia to fund its military for a whole year.

https://crea.shinyapps.io/russia_counter/?tab=methodology

and that in truth, is a bit unavoidable. the infrastructure to replace that supply just doesn’t exist at this time.

As much as it pains me, this escalates and kicks off big time. I read Turkey are at the same time eyeing Northern Syria, and China adjusted its legality for another type of ‘special operation’ obviously on Taiwan. We should have got stuck in when I was moaning years ago and got silenced for it. “Russia, Meddling, Dolls” was the thread back on the old site, 2017 I think.

We’ve been subject to exotic warfare from this secret alignment for over 10 years and softened up.

Saw a great joke today, Russia eyeing Ukr, China eyeing Taiwan, and the US deciding what a female is :raising_hand_woman:

yep, society has gone soft and politicians have become corrupt. nobody wants to fight a war, that’s “other people’s” problems. as long as they have the idiot box in front of their face with their favorite TikTok influencers, no fucks given.

sad, sad state of affairs.

When weren’t they?

Its gotten much worse tho, and is critical now. It used to be cash for planning permission. Globalisation for the west was not so much exporting capitalism, it was importing hyper-corruption. I assume you saw Boris coked off his nut when he rigged the vote to stay in power? The PM coked up for an interview.

Yeah we need to completely decouple from china and Russia. Confiscate all assets owned by state entities or nationals of those countries and deport their citizens back to their hellholes. A new iron curtain completely cutting off the CCP and CCCP, to hell with the immediate economic costs.

Incredulous lies, obviously, but the audacity to carry on is psychotic.

That Meduza article, always the failure of Russia has been for power to outweigh reason. That is close to zenith right now. 1. Stalin 2. Putin lets hope he stays a challenger.

It breaks my heart to see so many innocent people killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There’s something that is so stirring to see the pictures of people who laid down their lives fighting against the aggressor.

Does anyone have a decent grasp of where all this is likely going to lead?

My impression is that Ukraine has fought valiantly and inflicted lots of damage on the Russian aggressor, but over time the sheer quantity of Russian bombardment has added up and taken an enormous toll.

Ukraine has received help from many countries, but not quite 100% full and unconditional help. It has always seemed like the west will help so much, but no more than that, so as not to cause direct conflict with Russia and risk escalation to the nuclear threshold. So when it comes to sanctions from Europe, it only goes so far, and is unfortunately undermined by propping Russia up economically, mostly due to buying energy from Russia.

Sanctions on the one hand. Cash for Putin on the other.

I saw a map a while ago that showed the oil and gas reserves under Ukraine. Maybe it said it was greater than the reserves of Norway?

So I have wondered if that is the end game? Russia takes those regions, Ukraine fights, is helped somewhat, but ultimately loses due to the sheer volume of Russian bombardment.

Is that where this is heading? Does anyone have a good grasp of the likely outcome yet?

Or will Russia want more? E.g. All of Ukraine. Then other nation states too, within the former Soviet bloc?

Is it a much bigger fight than Ukraine? Does Russia want to exploit all the natural resources of countries that were formerly in its sphere? Is China helping Russia? While their economic partnership is galling, I don’t see a lot of difference between that and, say, Germany (and others) buying Russian energy.

I’m heartbroken about the whole thing, and it seems clear that the west is not going to fully help. If that’s how it is, my expectation is a valiant effort from Ukraine, inflicting plenty of losses on Russia… but ultimately Russia will prevail, not least due to volume of weaponry and larger geopolitical aims.

Is that a reasonable take?

Peace talks only when Russia leaves Ukraine - Vitali Klitschko

Nick Beake

Reporting from Kyiv

The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has told the BBC his country will only enter peace talks after the “last Russian soldier has left Ukraine”.

The former world heavyweight boxing champion was attending the funeral of a well known 24- year-old anti-corruption activist turned volunteer fighter, Roman Ratushnyi, who was killed in Izyum, in the Kharkiv region, earlier this month.

Some Ukrainian officials have expressed private concerns that Western allies may push their country towards a peace deal with Russia in light of the ongoing fallout from the war on food and energy supplies and the global economy.

When I asked Mayor Klitschko if he was concerned Ukraine could be pressured to making concessions to the Russians, he replied:

“The Russians talked about ‘Let’s find a compromise. Let’s find a solution’. What are they talking about? Which compromise? To give parts of Ukrainian territory to the Russians is not a compromise.

“I’m more than sure we will be ready to talk with the Russians about some compromise. If the last Russian soldier left Ukraine, it will be time to talk but not yet. Russians have to go from our homeland.”

Ukrainian commanders on the front line in Donbas in the east of the country say they are heavily outgunned by the Russians and losing hundreds of troops every day.

Klitschko, who won legions of global fans during his long record-breaking boxing career, told the BBC that the Russian people would eventually realise their own soldiers were dying for nothing more than President Vladimir Putin’s ambition.

He told me, “This is also a tragedy for Russians and for the Russian Federation. The people do not understand that right now, but I am sure they will realise very soon the reality. The Russians die - for what? The ambition of Putin? That’s why the unity around Ukraine and all democratic countries is key for peace and freedom in Europe.”

As one of the most recognisable Ukrainians in the world, Klitschko’s voice carries weight but the ultimate decision on if and when to enter peace talks will be down to President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government.

My wild guess would be: This war will drag on for a while… maybe a year or two until everyone barely stands on their feet due to heavy attrition, crashed economy and financial breakdown. After that EU and US will force UA split. East and South will be Russian, West, NW and N will remain Ukrainian and they’ll join EU but not NATO. Maybe they’ll sign some kind of security guarantees with NATO. Puto… sorry… Putin will declare a great anti Nazi victory. He’ll take over all natural sources in Donbass and around Crimea. Sanctions will be off in couple of months and everybody will start buying Russian energy again.

If that happens the Putin appeasers within Europe can go fuck themselves.
