The Russian Invasion of Ukraine (Part 2)

I am back.

Do you want Twitter updates as before or should I leave this thread alone for conversation?

Twitter updates?

  • Yes, I find it interesting
  • No, it’s hard to follow. I’ll check it out myself.

I’ve been keeping it to major talking points to limit the post count, as Twitter is accessible to all.

Note that I got a message from Magnus that he’s alive and well after a hiatus/vacation and could be lurking around…

when that Crimean Bridge goes down, that’ll be the next stage of escalation.

Yes according to reports I heard. Either that or contaminate Moscow and the population watching the parade.

interesting, that’s quite the theory. Unproven of course, because the soviets would never allow that to become public.

Agreed. I’ll try and find the report again.

A before and after of the base hit in Crimea

Confirmed visual damage below, I would hazard a guess and say actual losses a few airframe higher, not to mention support equipment, munitions and fuel losses and of course, personnel.

Another source on the same action:

By all accounts out there, this was the single biggest loss of Russian aircraft since WW2. The cost of the damage will run into possibly hundreds of millions of dollars and that base will be out of commission for a while, I’d imagine. This is one of the most significant military actions since the war began.

Please continue. If I may, though, perhaps a little context and commentary on the tweets? That way, we can get involved in discussion on what are the talking points.

I agree with @wyld.at.hrt The tweets are really informative, but sometimes context can be missing if some explanation isn’t included.

And as someone that doesn’t like trawling through the shite that is twitter I do appreciate the effort that others make to find good sources of news and information

I’m open for any suggestions. Just tell me what’s ok and what’s not…

I’m sure that the naïve in the government would say it isn’t the goal, and genuinely believe it, but you can also be sure that the vultures are lining up for the inevitable lobbying after.

Doesn’t have to be a pre-existing incentive for the opportunists to swoop in. Personally, I hope the fossil fuels never get extracted, and that whatever has the profits staying in Ukrainian hands.

I think you underestimate the Russian strategic goal of political control over the most important satrapies of the Russian Empire. I don’t think this is just a resource grab for Russia. Gepolitical control over imperial heartlands I think is much more important as a catalyst. But of course, that is a form of greed as well. But yeah, I don’t think this is about “money” per see.
