The Steven Gerrard Thread

There seems to be a common line trotted out about Gerrard not improving Villa based on Lazy journalism looking at the League table and noting he started and they were 16th and the finished 14th, but this doesn’t tell the true picture.

If you actually analyse the League table from the game Gerrard started, Game 12 until the end of the season only 8 Teams recorded more League points than Villa. Man City, Us, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Utd, Newcastle, Utd and Leicester. Leicester only managed to beat them by 2 points.

Wolves managed to get the same amount of points during this period to Villa, but from the rest Villa outperformed them by:

Brentford + Brighton +1
West Ham + Palace +2
Leeds + Burnley +8
Southampton +9
Everton +11
Norwich +18
Watford +22

People are quick to discharge the Job Gerrard has done, but rush to lavish praise on the work done by the likes of Potter, Moyes and Viera, Gerrard has outperformed them all in his time, albeit it by a fraction.

But based on the fact he has had to hit the ground running, with no preseason to get across his ideas and playing style, I think he has done a decent job. He now gets the benefit of Pre Season to really drill in his playing style and strengthen the areas he has identified weaknesses.

Plus the job he did at Rangers was remarkable considering, and you have to factor in the work he has done over the years and in pre season for the success they have had this year in Europe. He certainly had a hand in them getting to that final this year.

I’m not getting carried away with him, but he has certainly showed improvement year on year at Rangers, and he certainly improved Villa in his short time so far, the proof will be in the pudding next season, but if as above highlights, if the season had started when his first game was played, Villa would be joint 9th with 11 to play, 2 points off 7th and a place in Europe. I don’t think many people would be as quick to say he hasn’t improved them.

It will be interesting to see how they do next season. Stevie is making a couple moves in the market, and like you say will have a preseason to get his idea across.

My guess is solid top half, with an outside chance of lower Europe, which would represent good progress.

He is doing well, and will show more of what he can do next term.

I take your point but Stevie has also had a decent squad with several of his players added and I think that

will be the expectation for next season. Anything lower would be disappointing, anything better would suggest that he is on the right path to a longer career as a manager. We shall see but so far I think the jury is still very much out as to whether he will even be as successful as the likes of Potter and Moyes and I think he’d really have to take and then keep Villa in Europe before he could even be considered in the frame for the role of Liverpool manager sometime in the future.

His daughter is going out with one of the biggest gangsters in Irelands son. Strange knowing his history and issues with gangs back in Liverpool why he’s even allowed that to happen lol

She’s 18 and legally an adult?

I mean I suppose but with a 22 year old with his ties. Plenty of other lads out there for her rather than the offspring of a man who’s responsible for hundreds of murders and deaths due to drugs.

He can tell her what he thinks, but the idea that he can “allow” her to do one thing or another is absurd.

He might tell her that her choice of boyfriend is poor, but there is no way (and often counter-productive anyway) for him to ban her from seeing the boy.

To have your daughter doing that just screams poor parenting.

Without being close to the situation, it doesn’t seem right to weigh in on Stevie’s parenting skills. Maybe there’s something there and he hasn’t been a good father. Or maybe it is the mother who is the problem. Or more likely, maybe the daughter is her own person and is determined to see who she wants no matter what her parents prefer. She wouldn’t be the first person raised in a nice home with every opportunity, who nevertheless made her own bad decisions growing up. Then again, maybe the son of the gangster is a top fella, and it’s not his fault his dad is a scumbag.

So many variables with regard to what is going on, that it doesn’t seem right to me to judge it.

If it’s wrong, then hopefully it fails and they all move on.

Oh, and I know nothing about the gangster stuff, but if he has committed serious crimes, and it is known, and there’s evidence, he should be locked up for a very long time.

Of course but in the absence of further info it really suggests that the values instilled by her parents are not ones that most reds would approve of. The male children of very serious criminals engaged in some of the worst crimes are not (on the face of it, which is all we have here) whom most parents would choose as the intimate partners for their daughters - especially when they have grown up surrounded by relative wealth and privilege and have many other options. Like I said, based on what we have to go on, not a great parenting outcome. Of course I am happy to revise my opinion when/if less damning info comes out in the future.

It suggests nothing of that sort really. Not unless you want to make snap judgments that confirm a pre-existing bias.

Not going to argue but my point stands. Good day sir.

Hope Stevie can smash Everton and fat Frank today!

Unless yours is in the future I think he’s correct?

Well at least the BBC can rest easy knowing that unequivocally, Gerrard is a better manager than Lampard as the answer was resting solely on the outcome of this game

That should settle the Gerrard vs Lampard debate once and forever.
