UEFA Champions League (Part 1)

Newcastle have won nothing since 1969, when they won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup. That’s 54 yrs of failure and counting.

And they ain’t winning this.

Although it would be hilarious if they did.

To see two sportswashing clubs win it in consecutive years would surely get the traditional European giants to seriously consider setting up their own competition again.

Annoyingly, there were credible stories of Qatar getting bored with the PSG experiment and had been considering pulling out, or at least pulling back significantly after the world cup. The the Saudis showed up and Newcastle and they didnt want to be seen as being chased off by their great regional rival so internally recommitted.

It was predating City winning it. If anything the attitude seemed to stem from a realizing of how difficult it was when the only thing you had was money and were against legitimate legacy organizations who knew their shit.

City winning it probably reinvigorated them and convinced them of the potential to buy their success.

Tô be fair they still look rather bored of the project, I really wouldn’t have a worry if we had them in a group match.

I have a friend, who I’ve mentioned quite a few times during my years on TIA and TAN, who is a die-hard Man United fan, a really funny and educated guy and also a brilliant journalist. Reading Luke Edwards’ opinions on Newcastle after the Saudi takeover is so reminiscent of my friend’s thoughts on every wrong decision that went Man United’s way, it’s not even funny. It’s like they turn into completely different persons when their respective clubs come up in a discussion.

I think I stopped discussing football with him when Ibrahimović scored in 1:1 draw against us after the guy who crossed to him had found himself a yard offside. Some people just have a way with thoughts and words even when they are completely wrong and the smartest thing you can do is just to not discuss that stuff with them, otherwise your mental health will suffer. The probable difference between my friend and Edwards, though, is that my friend isn’t getting financially compensated for turning a blind eye to all the things obvious.

You should come over here, and see the amount of sane, smart people who dismiss the lunacy of Trump. It’s easy for some people to become cult followers.

The problem there is that any breakaway super league would also involve the sportwashing countries teams.

How is the season three?

I’ve not watched the redo. I was referring to the original. David Lynch is a fave of mine.

What you reckon @Iftikhar … ??

There have been games yesterday and no new posts in this thread.

I might not be the only one who is not really interested in this years group stage.

Are there any interesting teams at all in the group stage?

Only interest I have in the CL is to see United finish 3rd so we can knock them out of Europe ourselves. Other than that, I only really remembered there are CL games on this week because we have an EL game coming up.

I dont like the swiss model we’re moving to, but the consolidation of power into a smaller number of teams that has occurred over the last ten years or so has made this stage of the competition become largely meaningless for the average fan not supporting their specific team.

It’s rare there is more than 1 group that has any genuine intrigue from the draw and so really the only point in watching is to watch teams you’re interested in but dont watch much of their domestic football partake in a processional exercise. Or, for the sake of a train crash of a supposedly big team fucking up what should have been a straight forward qualification.

Utd offer a lot for the neutral, but football, especially at this level, should be about more than laughing Utd being shit.
