UEFA Champions League (Part 1)

Nah.

There should be an NFL-style knockout schedule, whereby in each round, the highest remaining seed gets the lowest, the second highest gets the second lowest, etc.

Of course, that would mean that the UEFA bigwigs and their assorted hangers-on miss out on a jolly as no draw would be required.

Maybe United are a better chance than City of qualifying next season……

On that basis Spurs probably even more so :joy:

If this Champions League system made any sense it would simply be the highest qualified team vs the lowest qualified team and go from there.

It would basically be…

Liverpool (1) v Club Brugge (20)
Barcelona (2) v Feyenoord (19)
Arsenal (3) v Benfica (16)
Inter (4) v PSG (15)
Atletico (5) v PSV (14)
Leverkusen (6) v Bayern Munich (12) - This actually is the tie
Lille (7) v Real Madrid (11)
Aston Villa (8) v Dortmund (10)

But of course UEFA have to F it up and have their little draw instead.

Exactly what I said three posts above yours. :+1:

Yeah but I laid out the potential fixtures so I look way cleverer.

I’ll do it again look…

It’s ā€œclevererererā€, stoopid.

And that bracket wouldn’t necessarily work out as if, say, Liverpool got beaten by Brugge then Barcelona would become the highest remaining seed and then face Brugge, who would be the lowest remaining side.

Throw them all in one basket and just pull out teams randomly, without any criteria. Everything done in 5 minutes, no calculations or looking ahead, focusing on the next match and everyone gets on with it.

That would be my favourite way.

Their line of thinking seems to be… once the play-off games have taken place, viz having to play an extra round, then all bets are off regarding further seeding, and every team left participating has an equal chance.
Putting teams that finish first and second in the league, on opposite sides of the knockout stage so they can’t meet until the final… seems to be the only reward for both teams efforts… :man_shrugging:

I can only conclude that you have never watched a UEFA draw ceremony before.

No difference. We will beat Bayern in the final in their own stadium.

Nah, it will be the Arne Slot derby.

By the way Bayern haven’t beaten Leverkusen since Xabi took over. 3Ls & 3Ds in all competitions.

That’s why I’m offering a solution.

:sunglasses:

I do watch it when I can (I like the exciting moment not knowing who we’re about to face and also transfer deadline days), but yeah most of it is just protocol rubbish.

Always found it amazing when all the club representatives wrote down who they drew. Because careful, UEFA are only going to say it once, so better not forget.

:joy:

Well they have to justify their little expensed trip to Nyon. ā€œSee I wrote down who we play! Yes dinner was $5,000.ā€

Where are 9 and 13?

They’ve been knocked out.

9 (Atalanta) lost to Brugge and 13 (Milan) lost to Feyenoord.

Careless. Now the numbers are playing havoc with my ocd.

Right, so I invite you all to make your predictions for the semi finals.

I am going for Liverpool vs Arsenal, and Barcelona vs Bayer Leverkusen.

I realise the obvious prediction would be us playing Madrid and Barcelona against Bayern Munich, but I just have a funny feeling it is not going to go that way.

I’ll wait to see if we get Paris first.
