Wether we should or shouldn’t have had one was not the point of my post. It was a reply to idea that Cameron was a statesman and excellent PM.

But to answer your question, yes. We don’t let people drive cars at 120mph, smoke crack or a variety of other things that harm them. Referenda are a dreadful way to make policy decisions, as it has been shown to be the case with Brexit.
