Before it descends into a party political issue, I think it’s a worrying authoritarian streak that has been present in most of the governments in the last couple of decades at least.
It certainly affected the Blair government. For a country with no written constitution that relies on the rule of precedent, it is highly imprudent to set them for short term advantage.
Half of Monbiot’s essay doesn’t even deal with the Tories, despite the summary. It talks a lot about Blair’s government, and how police forces were misusing the law.
The headline that matters
From afar, England seems to be going the way of a lot of places, with authoritarianism on the rise, and fear of the ‘other’ being stoked up via imprudent language.
I can’t decide if we deserve better politicians, or if the bunch we have now is what we deserve. What I do know is that the sense I had from years ago, when I was confident there was some gravitas within the political ranks, regardless of viewpoint, has evaporated.
Couldn’t agree more.
I’d add that I do see the current crop of politicians largely in it for themselves rather than providing a service for want of a better word.
It just seems to be a mechanism to extract money from people.
To any Londoners, be careful.
Welcome to our new dystopian future.
One that’s full of shit:
So all reports indicate that it is the counter-protesters causing issues…
FARKIN’ LOL
Suella should be sacked on Monday morning, but Rishi the spineless cunt doesn’t have the backbone.
You didn’t need to be psychic to see that one coming, did you?
Give me a break. I was worn out from predicting the 4-1 result tomorrow.
Chelsea vs Cheaty???
Oi, back to work. You’re not finished on Red Caf yet.
Rishi needs to sack Suella. He looks weak, not taking charge of the situation.
I don’t like the Tories but one of the things that are known for is their pro police, law and order sort of viewpoint. She broke from that, while also stoking up possible conflict.
While I’m on that, a false choice, either/or, is being set up. Why can’t people pay respects in the memory of those who fought in the great wars of the past and paid the ultimate sacrifice, while also not standing for what Netanyahu and the Israeli government is doing today?
Seems like you have to be in one extreme camp or the other these days. A sensible down the middle approach is lost in the noise.
Well done to the 300k that marched in London and other UK cities yesterday.
Sunak is as thick as two short planks really. Marching for peace and to put a halt to war crimes on Armistice Day is disrespectful?
Fuck. You. Sunak.
Though he’s doing a good job at recreating the divide with the help of that nasty mad woman!
… Oh! and that leader of the opposition, that isn’t really an opposition at all as they have far too few seats due to some get it done union jacks on marmalade jars stuff!
I LOVE the Met’s response to the day.
Essentially blamed Cruella as much as they could without naming her.
Not a fan of the Met, by any means, but they are best placed to tell that horrible cunt to STFU.
WHY THE FUCK IS FUCKING NADINE DORRIES ALLOWED ON THE BBC??
What could she possibly add to any debate??
