UK Politics Thread (Part 4)

Go on, what Facebook comments are you on about?

Would you care to demonstrate these cases, what the charges were, what the standard sentencing guidelines are, what the evidence was, and what the burden of proof is?

I just had to endure an interview with Boris Johnson live on French tv. He was there ostensibly to promote his book but was ambushed with a cutaway piece about his Brexit promises , juxtaposed with a video montage of a decrepit NHS. It really was quite a brutal exposure of what his party has done to the once best thing about the country and had him bloviating and blustering like the con man he is.

He looked fucking terrible , hair even more ridiculous than usual , eyes even more bagged and jowls reminiscent of a basset hound. He spoke in French but his vocabulary was so limited as to make most of what he said repetitive and meaningless. To compensate he was gesticulating even more than usual and clearly thought he was coming across well.

How wrong he was. The interviewer , the merciless Anne -Sophie Lapix , was clearly immune to his charms and typically incredulous at some of his claims , and wasn’t afraid to let him know neither.

I’ve heard that in his book he says that he should never have apologised for Partygate and now that he’s seen how the master of never saying sorry has stormed back into power , it’s hard not to suspect that he’s already making plans.

Hasta la vista baby.

The court case is still gathering evidence. Do you want the perpetrator to escape on a legal technicality?

You may not like Keir Starmer or his politics, which is fair enough, but he is absolutely a stickler for the letter of the law.

Given that we have had a fair few years of total disregard for legal process, I find it quite refreshing.

It is a legit point that ā€œseriousā€ criminals are released early and social media posters are locked up.

Wall, blindfolds, firing squad.

And why did they have to let people out of jail to let a person in who was found guilty of posting stuff on facebook that started riots?

Why isnt Farage in jail then? He posts utter tripe a the time?

Puzzling :man_shrugging:

Not really, he’s awaiting trial. But you could have looked that up.

This thing you have of editing posts to try and be clever isnt a great look imo. Fine for a laugh but to be clever it doesnt quite work.

Just sayin.

Awaiting trial, not fast tracked then?

Thats a question for the prosecution service I guess.

Well they’re not going to answer me are they?

I’m no Farage fan, but you’re asking why he isnt in jail for posting ā€œutter tripeā€, yet seem pretty relaxed about someone caught on video asking for throats to be cut to just await trial.

Facebook posters jailed almost instantly, yet Ricky Jones awaiting trial.
Don’t you see where people might form an opinion that there are double standards at play?

All that money spent on a privileged education… and he has never been taught how to sit on a seat properly - The arrogant fuck

The bar is getting lower and lower all the time.

I had an exchange on here a few weeks ago and it left me in no doubt where things are heading.
Opinion = ā€œSpeculationā€ = knock on door.

And my neighbour was recently burgled. They gave a crime number but didn’t attend due to staffing. Fucking joke.

It is literally disinformation.

I read Rory Stewart’s autobiography in the summer. A government minister for ten years , various cabinet posts and leadership contender. He was Minister for Prisons as recently as 2019 , appointed in 2018 in the wake of a damning report on the state of HMP Liverpool, in which the inspector described it as the ā€œworst prison he had ever seenā€

The prison system nationally was in crisis with rising rates of violence , drug use and virtually no prospect of rehabilitation for any offenders. He identified overcrowding and under staffing as being the main driver in decline of standards and was the person behind the drive , along with the support of his then boss at Justice , David Gauke , who I think may have been invited into the new Labour Govt. or , at the least , has advised on this matter.

The people being released are those serving sentences of less than a year I think , a category of internees which Stewart said should be done away with altogether. I think it’s to the credit of Starmer that he’s taken up such a common sense policy , regardless of where it’s come from and in spite of the wholely predictable flak that he’s going to take from the right wing press.

Wonder who slashed police numbers?

Well for starters Farage hasnt broken any laws even though he’s been walking a tightrope. The issue of misinformation is a huge one and maybe one for another day.

There’s lots of reasons why trials take longer to arrrive in the courtroom than others including scheduling, complexity etc.

The world isnt black and white. Sometimes you need to go through certain processes and get your ducks in a row.

This conversation is just weird. This stuff is kind of obvious.
