I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment, but I would like to offer a defence of Bonus here for the sake of fairness.
I agree that he could have chosen another wording ofc, however the reason why he did write what he did above, is that he originally wrote migrants, but there was a reaction to that or something (I don’t want to scroll). Then he responded in this manner, writing these ahem “people” instead. Imo, context critically matters here in this case.
I just don’t think, due to context, that he deserves condemnation for this alone (but maybe he said something else, I don’t know), despite choosing his words terribly. That is all.
But maybe it’s me who is missing the context (I only skim this thread due to the for me, uninteresting circle wandering, between Lynch and others, which I don’t always find interesting to read since I tend to learn nothing).
So maybe I missed context and previous statements etc. Very possible.
But for now, I just thought that I should at least be honest and write out bluntly that I am aware that he first wrote migrants, and responded with the “these ahem people” only after having had someone react to his original, less problematic, wording.
your bang on the money as to the reason why I wrote “these ahem ‘people’”
funnily enough, I’m pretty this sure this was an argument used against some-one earlier in this thread due to there views on immigration and the help they receive from the UK (possibly Jaffod)
I don’t want to rake this up, but it started with a post by Achtungbaby which you liked, so presumably read:
“The RNLI don’t save migrants, they save people. And attacking them for doing so is not just wrong, it’s disgusting, reprehensible, and should be condemned as such.
These men and women risk their lives regularly for us all, with no discrimination as to who you might be, and they will do so without hesitation.
We should be appalled at these attacks, and those doing it should be ashamed and called out.”
To which Bonus replied “There (sic) still migrants”
Implying that their status as migrants trumped their status as people.
Achtungbaby then wrote:
“I don’t get your point tbh. I’m putting it in the context of an emergency service called to help people in distress, the response is the same regardless of who the people are or how you would label them.”
To which Bonus wrote:
“These ahem ‘people’ dont have any documents, as we"re reminded on here quite frequently…”
Clearly implying that they should be abandoned at sea because they might not have the necessary paperwork.
I didn’t want to bring this up again Markus, but you did, and you commented without having all the information. I stand by my original point that every human deserves to be treated decently and within the law. Being a migrant, even an illegal one shouldn’t be punishable by summary execution and that no human should be described in apostrophes, or with the addition of ‘ahem’.
Sorry to reply to you although you said it’s your last word on this but I read Bonus post just like in a football context, ‘he is a legendary footballer but that doesn’t change the fact he is a dickhead’
The ‘people’ part looks from the angle of compassion but ‘migrants’ looks from the part of legalities. I don’t think these terms are mutually exclusive.
I hope none of us here would actually think we should leave anyone to die at sea, there should be no question about saving a boatful of people about to drown but the 2nd question that people and the country had not answered, at least not clear, is what do you do with them after saving them and bringing them onto UK soil. Migration is never a problem until you don’t know or have the iron to do what is right for the migrants and for your own citizens.
I am going to have to politely decline your request.
Firstly, I never said equally, you have added that part.
Secondly, we have discussed this before. I could ask you now if the Leave campaign hold any blame for where we are now and i wouldn’t learn anything from your answer.
I was going to quote the whole of your post. Which as always in these matters balanced and reflective.
Instead, I decided to quote your last point, as I think this is very apt. And maybe should be given more consideration by all.
I do not know the in’s and out’s of France’s situation and nor have I ever pretended to.
This thread at times has focused on the disaster that is Brexit, the UK leaving the EU and rightly so. All I have ever tried to do is put some perspective to this.
France and other Countries who are part of the EU have also struggled economically. Yet, we focus on the UK’s performance as an anomaly to the rest of the EU and primarily single it down to Brexit.
So, to clarify, I am not trying to deflect or make excuses for the UK’s current situation, nor am I looking to point fingers.
However, I am quite within my right to highlight the fact that other Countries economies, who remain part of the EU are struggling, and this is without leaving.
All these economies were ‘struggling’ before Brexit. Brexit hit all of them to differing degrees the hit to the UK was biggest as it lost the most economically.
Above all it lost, rightly so, it’s European exception it’s financial passport. This part I believe is very difficult to access as much of it was ‘hidden’ income. This means the UK probably lost a lot more than it bargained for.
I haven’t the time or patience to sift through any of this stuff. It seems to me you are the same however are influenced by click bait stuff on internet like Europe punishing you, nonsense it was behaving fairly taking away the UK permitted exceptions granted as being a member. These exceptions don’t every seem to have been explained to you, you as in the British electorate, this is where you should start looking if you wish to honestly understand the process of the négociations for example.
Btw it’s only under the tories that financial black holes kept appearing in the UK economy. It’s an important aspect to understand if your British living in the UK. What are they?
I’m surprised this has escaped the new filtering system. However, I am glad it has because it gives me a chance to respond.
If you don’t have the time or patience to sift through all this stuff then why openly challenge me. If you had read my posts you will see that I understand the EU’s stance, I understand them playing hardball, why give the UK an easy dealing it would only encourage others to leave.
However, I am quite within my right to question the incentives of other European Countries in the negotiations. France offering Tax exemptions to tempt the UK based Financial sector away from London is not removing permitted exceptions granted as part of the EU Membership. Do you agree or disagree?
So all of these Countries Economies were ‘struggling’ before Brexit???
So let me get this straight, these Economies were struggling before Brexit, so we are talking Pre 2016. Can you tell me how these Economies are faring now in 2026??? So 10+ years and still struggling. Not the best sales pitch.
It wasn’t my intention to start a mud sling fight and I will refrain from doing so. My intention was to highlight that other big economies in the EU are struggling.
Finally, there is a saying… People in Glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
‘People’ seems a more humane term than ‘Migrants’ or ‘Asylum Seeker’, which is more of a labelling, identifying of someone. If you flip it do people call people opposing immigration ‘People’ or ‘Racists’.
Either way, it is a practice that is becoming more common in society, where someone who has no first hand experience of a demographics situation start taking offence on their behalf.
