Virgil VAN DIJK: 2022/23

that’s a beauty bit of play taking advantage of our front press. Jones/Elliot are out of position centrally, Perisic pulls Trent up the wing, Son drops into the hole behind them to receive the pass on a quick one-two and Konate shadows him. Perisic being a very talented winger sees the hole develop and bolts for it. This is a designed play, guaranteed it’ll be reviewed.

The question you really should be asking, is when Perisic turns and bolts up the wing why the fuck isn’t Trent staying with him. Why is Jones (pressing from LCM) at RW? We get frustrated with Fab sometimes, but he’s the only one really where he’s supposed to be.

complete lack of positional awareness by Trent (which I’m getting used to), but another example of someone trying to shoehorn a piece of play into an agenda against a player. Konate was following his mark

Really interesting stats, but the eye test says he had a shocker, and has been off form a while.

With Virgil, it’s often not the stuff that the stats pick up - it’s being caught out of position, not bring proactive shutting down space etc.

what we’re seeing is the CB being isolated in 1v1 with some of the best wingers in the world. guys like Son and Perisic have been doing this for years and the advantage will always be with the speedy wingers having space to run. they’re faster to change directions and more agile.

When we have a tactical plan of advancing the FB up the pitch to engage and support the attack, we’re vulnerable in transition to those outside channels and it’s often utilized against us

They’re hand picked stats which is designed to be shown where he excelled at, for a defender there’s still so much more which aren’t revealed from that list…why? Because they don’t meet the criteria whoever posted it wanted to make.

It’s a bit like with Trent, you’ll only ever see stats posted about his passing and offensive play, never the defensive side.

Where are the stats such as fouls given away? Or number of times you were dribbled past? Or number of blocks? Direct error leading to goals? Interceptions? 50/50 ground duels won?

this highlight shows at 7:58 the play on their left wing. it’s a nicely developed play by Spurs, one touch passing from Perisic to Hojberg to Son to Skipp who catches Trent sleeping. you can see Perisic lay off to Hojberg and immediately on his bike up the wing. he knows that ball is coming and Trent is asleep. Van Dijk is isolated against Perisic, and Robbo has to drift towards him once Van Dijk slips.

I don’t have it game by game but here is a lot of those stats.

From what I’ve read today… Virgil and Kevin are neighbours and their kids best friends. (same school etc.) Happens :upside_down_face:

So he can move his arms from behind his back.

Good to see him letting his hair down.:woozy_face:

Since joining Liverpool in January 2018, he has played 222 games, 19899 mins, for the club and 42 games, 3825 mins, for the Netherlands. If we discount the 2020/21 season when he was largely injured, it’s nearly 5000 mins for club & country each season.

Yeah we should have been more rubbish then he would have played less.
