I mean I know little about Cruyff, and I don’t really care for most football things non-Liverpool, so it was a genuine question. I thought there was perhaps some arcane ritual about Italian forwards playing in Cruyff’s number doing blood sacrifices or something like that.
Nope.
Well that’s disappointing. You’ve ruined my week now.
Fair play to Romano, was the first to break this news…as he was Endo last summer I believe.
When that happens, you can put up as many tweets or fillers as you like.
Lad sounds really pleased to have joined us:
" Federico Chiesa says he “will have shivers” when he first walks out at Anfield after joining Liverpool for an initial £10m, plus a potential £2.5m in add-ons, from Juventus. When the Italy international flew over the ground on the way for his medical, he asked his wife to play You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Chiesa, whose father, Enrico, scored for Italy at Anfield during Euro 96, has signed a four-year deal and could feature at Manchester United on Sunday. The 26-year-old was in the last year of his contract at Juventus and was not part of new head coach Thiago Motta’s plans, leaving the forward to search for a new club.
“I just want to say something that stuck to my mind when I was about to land [in] the aeroplane,” Chiesa said. “I saw Anfield and as soon as I saw Anfield I said to my wife: ‘Put the song on [You’ll Never Walk Alone] because I want to imagine myself playing there and hearing the chant of the fans.’ It was just a fun bit. I will have shivers [when I play there] and it will be so emotional for me and for my family.”
The former Fiorentina player, who will wear the No 14 shirt, becomes the first outfield player to sign under Arne Slot after the goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joined and immediately returned to Valencia on loan. Chiesa was part of the Italy squad at Euro 2024 and has 51 caps and seven goals for his country. He won the European Championship in 2021, whenhe was named in the team of the tournament.
“I’m so happy to be a Liverpool player,” Chiesa said. “When [the sporting director] Richard Hughes called me and he said: ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’ – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans … I felt the people I talked to put a lot of faith and trust in me and that is what I wanted.”"
Welcome, Federico!
It is interesting that his dad was such an advocate of the move. With him being an ex player your reflex to that would be an assumption that he experienced a great night as an away player, or even was forced to be aware of us winning big trophies during his time, but that isnt who we were when Enrico was playing.
Liverpool were always a big club.
The sell on clause from Solanke and the transfer fee received from Clarke would in essence pay for a fair chunk of the transfer fee and wages of Chiesa.
He has legendary status in my eyes already thanks to the way he tore England to shreds in the Euro final at Wembley.
I suggested Kubo, Williams and Chiesa as three players we could go for in terms of the wide attacking player we wanted, the latter being a sneaky feeling due to the alleged figures banded around for him. I always felt it was going to be someone with a release clause, who had bags of potential and could be worth a fortune down the line, or someone who we could get value for.
Really excited to see what he can do, and how he’ll physically cope to the demands of the league.
On a random note, he does look a bit like a young Ron DeSantis (for the followers of US politics).
Well, do not forget Robbo. It took me months to understand him at the beginning tbh, always had to watch his interviews with subtitles.
Based on that interview he passed the ‘no dickheads’ test with flying colours. Seems intelligent, motivated and delighted to be a red
It would appear they show them ‘The Shawshank Redemption’
Man, did you have to add that? Will take effort to unsee that now.
Enrico would have been playing against those great AC Milan sides we faced in CL finals twice
I thought Endo was broken by one of the German randoms.
Credit on this one…
He was technically still playing then, but the peak of his career was Evans-Houllier era.
I think he will be a first team regular pretty soon. Not a back up to Mo, but a starter in his own right.
We could see rotation of positions and players from the front 6.
This has the potential to be a great piece of work.
