For as successful a manager he was for Utd, I can’t believe how he’s avoided any flak for their miserable demise.
He basically threw Gollum under the bus, almost in a “see I’m irreplaceable” kind of gesture, and thankfully things look no better 10 years later.
Twisted old cunt
There might not be the mood for it, and I understand, as it’s Ferguson and Man Utd.
But his last season there he left them as Champions. That was at the end of two decades that saw a lot of success, and a club transformed into an earning machine, as it capitalized on the new economics in the game better than most.
A new team needed to be built, over 2-3 seasons under a good football man, but the money was there to do it, and they had the draw to attract top players.
They squandered their ‘inheritance’ since Ferguson. Dodgy owners and a succession of managers who were either short term, or had no clue. The off pitch structure was lacking, and I blame the owners for that, as they inserted money men, not football men.
I can’t stand Ferguson as a man, but he is one of the best managers there has been, and he left Man Utd a lot better than he found it, they were current champions, and had the resources to build a new team as needed. The fact that people after Ferguson fell way short doesn’t seem like his fault to me.
You’re missing the point here. The only reason the Glazers came in to buy United shares is because of a disagreement Fergie had with the previous owners over the breeding rights to a horse they owned called rock of Gibraltar. Apparently they were all at a party after winning something (maybe the treble?), and after a few ales, the owners told Ferguson he could have whatever he wanted as a bonus, and Ferguson said he wanted part-ownership in the Horse. Apparently McManus and Magnier agreed verbally and it was forgotten about until a few years later when the horse had won a load of races and was worth about 50mil, Fergie went to cash in on his stake, only to be told he had no stake.
Ferguson took them to court and a massive row ensued, and as the story goes, it was Ferguson who tipped off Malcolm Glazer that there was an opportunity to buy shares in United. So the point is, obviously Ferguson is the greatest manager of all time and won a whole heap of trophies at United (though very little in Europe over the course of 28 years), but it’s the argument over the horse and Ferguson’s penchant for holding a grudge and being a petty arsehole that brought the Glazers into the club and put them in this current state.
Ferguson would rather safeguard his legacy and also preserve his paycheck than go against the Glazers. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some shares in the club as well.
There is a good TIFO video about this, but the argument was specifically about the stud rights. When it came time to sell the rights to the Equine Ejaculate Ferguson believed his share in the horse entitled him to a share in the stud fees, but M&M said it didn’t. Massive fall out, Owners forced in to sale, Ferguson ends up welcoming the Glazers with open arms, and telling the fans they are sound.
Yeah this sounds right, but I think the genesis of it was a semi-drunken “gentlemen’s agreement” that Ferguson believed they’d all entered into amicably, but M&M had evidently forgotten about it by the following morning. Not content with the likely millions Ferguson had already made by then, he went after M&M in court because he’s always been a spiteful wee shitbag. Fergie didn’t just welcome the Glazers with open arms, he specifically reached out to them to tell them about the opportunity to buy a minority stake. There’s also rumors that Ferguson greased the wheels with other minority owners to have them sell to Glazer so that they’d gain a majority holding and force M&M out.
Either way you slice it, Ferguson is the reason the Glazers are majority owners of united, and therefore the reason they’re in such a mess. Let’s not forget that he also completely mismanaged the squad after losing Tevez and Ronaldo in 2010, that 2013 team was one of the worst to ever win the league. They were an old and unbalanaced squad, and to put the cherry on top, he recommended fucking Moyes to replace him - the boss who proves that you don’t need trophies to be a winner but he is a winner.
These are big ships that take a long time to turn around, but also means a once well run club can run on momentum for a while even while being mismanaged behind the scenes.
The period of rot began in the Fergie-Glazer era, with Fergie going to bat for the new owners. But those early years were a well put together side still in its prime. It would take a few years for the issues to become apparent. There is a very understandable rationale for him retiring when he did given his age and having wrested back the title, but it is not credible to think knowledge of how huge a job he had on his hands to rebuild that now aged team was not on his mind so he fucked off to let someone else deal with it
I think Man Utd were okay as long as Gill was in charge of the transfers. Once he left and Woodward (bless his soul) was made the main man , the rot set in fast.
