Possibly Onana, Dalot, Mazraoui, Hojlund and Mainoo. But juries out on all of them. The rest look utter shite. Bruno is obv a good player but a team morale vacuum. The worst captain I’ve ever seen
Amorim will be playing against better teams, better coaches and at a pace 100mph faster than anything he is used to. Fixture list will smother him… gone are the days of spending more time on the training ground, perfecting every small detail, and if he doesn’t have a change of tactics plan besides a, of b,c,d.e the guy will struggle - as soon as he plays the players he has, in the formation he favours, every team in the PL will have it sussed within weeks.
There are a lot of square pegs at Utd who are on lots of money. No doubt bad habits, lack of effort and discipline has crept into their persona… not going to be easy to get a reliable tune out of them consistently.
We watch with interest
In the short term doesn’t have to be that good, just enough to do a job for the team while the rebuild begins. I think last season his performances were let down by an unwillingness by team mates to pass him the ball - although maybe that is symptomatic of them too not rating him?
I don’t think Utd are in any worse a position in terms of personnel than we were when Klopp took over. There are reports of his first end of season review where he identified only Bobby and Lallana as players who had completely convinced him. Yet after just 2 summers of additions he got his side to the CL final. That was driven partially by transfer success (that team included 6 new players, and would have been 7 had Joel been fit), growth of some inherrited players whose importance was not immediately apparent (Hendo and Milly), but also the ability to find a role for a good sized group of players who were never going to be part of the destination but good enough to play a role through thattransition (see Can still playing 40 games in a season despite being on his way out of the door).
Utd have a squad full of players who are at least as good as that. The questions will be
can Amorim identify the path forward as quickly and clearly as Klopp did and start implementing it
will he be as well supported as Klopp was in terms of finding the right signings early on (Mane, Joel, Gini, Mo, Robbo, Virgil is an absurd hit rate to bring in over 2 season)
Klopp might not have inherited many he was completely sold on, but critically it did include Bobby. He was absolutely central to being able to implement Klopp’s vision from the get go, and Amorim will be hard pressed to find that sort of figure in the group he walks into.
I think the culture behind the scenes is an even bigger problem than the quality of their players. Bruno said yesterday, “It is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players.” The players know they’re more valuable to the club than the manager and stop trying when things go wrong.
