Yeah. I have far more sympathy with the argument about making it more expensive for match going fans in general than one about lack of consultation. What does the latter accomplish? Makes you take time to go to a meeting just to be told the prices are going up?
@Zoran has a point but just to emphasise my opinion of the CHAD transfer window, whenever I talk about the worst signings in Liverpoolâs history, I always - and I literally, literally mean always - forget Downing, just like I tend to forget that he played for Rodgersâ Liverpool. While Diouf, MarkoviÄ and Balotelli have a strong argument for being the worst signings this club has made, Downing edges all three in my mind. Anyway, we can carry this over to another thread, thereâs a dissection of Man United to be continued.
By the way, 2002 was worse for me because we were on the verge of winning big things. Came second in the league, were minutes away from a CL semi, etc.
2011 was⌠well, letâs just say that the Carroll transfer already lowered my expectations (Suarez was a masterstroke though). That team was a tough watch.
Downing at least had a period of 10 or so games where he was passable as a LB (although I recall, maybe Im imagining it though, that he was predicatbly shit defending back post crosses). But I hate him for putting me in the position of trying to argue we got a better deal from Villa than Utd did for Young
Downingâs best (oh my) period for us was playing RW near the end of the 12/13 season. He had some good games then, finally showed some end product also. Almost earned himself another season. Brendao I think wanted to keep him as backup RW. Then he went to West Ham and initially played really well as a LCM double pivot, under Sam. Weird and interesting.
But yeah, one of the most uninspiring Liverpool signings ever. We were crying out for a serious winger since I donât know, McManaman (when you look now we had Barnes, McManaman and until Mane, so many years between them with not enough threat out wide). We were finally able to spend a few quid on one. And then we get a guy with 0 imagination about him. I used to say about him that he probably never watched cartoons in his childhood.
The funny thing is that the previous season, he was playing more inside right of a midfield 4, very narrow. Then Kenny probably had an idea of Henderson imitating Houghton on the right side, Downing imitating Barnes (oh boy) on the left (very easy to defend against) and then Suarez and Carroll to be his Beardsley and Aldridge.
