Missed that United agreed new contracts with 4 players whoâs deals were expiring; Dalot, Shaw, Fred and Rashford.
Could see them aiming for a goalkeeper, certainly a midfielder to play alongside Casemiro and a striker. 3 main signings and then possibly another 1-2 who would be more for depth or the future. Depending on what they achieve this season, budget, etc.
With Rashfordâs form as the left wide forward, not sure if they were even in such a need for Gakpo in last weeks. Think the main focus for them now will be to get a proper striker who can play back to goal more. They have enough pace/forwards facing the goal.
But you could âfeelâ how both Portugal and United feel better with Ronaldo not there anymore.
Turned it off after the second goal. Knew it was going to be a long night for forest when I saw Hennessy was playing. He went down so slowly for the second goal I thought my stream had frozen.
People may lazily view him as one or able to do the job up front because of his numbers, height, ability to score with both feet.
But really, is he the type of player youâd start up top, already having the likes of Rashford and Antony on the sides?
It could easily be the case that United were very interested, especially before they started getting signals of Rashfordâs new form. But itâs very possible that the timing and need for Gakpo wasnât really that high. Better to continue like this, get a different player if they can in January and/or wait for the summer when they have a clearer idea what to do?
I donât think they will go for an inactive big lump of a target man, but certainly I see them eyeing someone who can provide back to goal stuff a lot more, considering what they have between the lines to operate behind and then beyond a player like that.
Utd spent a LOT of money in the summer, north of 200m net. This failure to move on Gapko I think is more a case of not being prepared to spent at all in this window having spent so much in the summer, than being out maneuvered.
My eldest is adopted. As we lived in Scotland I was rather keen that he didnât get involved in the whole Old Firm nonsense. He asked me why I supported Liverpool and I explained that it was the closest club to where I was born and thatâs the one that my family supported.
He looked on a map to see which ground was nearest to where he was born. It turned out to be Old Trafford. I suggested that he should follow cricket.
Similar to me. Growing up in W Wales there wasnt an obvious team so support so as my dadâs family was from Manchester I said Iâd support City like him. He said he wouldnt allow his son to go through that and so if I wanted to piss off my uncle (who supports Utd) I should choose Liverpool instead.
I understood it from Teen Haag that he had assurances that they would replace Ronaldo with an attacking player though and that he seems genuinly surprised that they are not going after his main target. He has wanted this man for a very long time.
You can make an argument that Utd need to do something to fill the gap Ronaldo left. On the other hand, it was clear that Utd would have moved him in the summer if they could and EtH would have been happy with that. If he felt this side couldnât cope without a replacement for a player he was already planning on marginalizing then he should have prioritized getting that player in the summer when he had access to a 200m+ âwar chest.â He could have got Gapko then, but prioritized Anthony instead. Utd are now seemingly quite reasonably asking why they should spend money on a player they overlooked in the summer, and who does not primarily play the role theyâre trying to find a solution for now.
I really dont feel like them missing out on Gapko is is a continuation of the Woodward era futility in the market, and if anything is one of the first signs of them running a process that has joined up thinking.
And when he could have bought him in the summer he went for Anthony instead.
My lad was born in Liverpool, so his choice of team was a no brainer.
Wife bought him an England shirt when he was young, weâd moved back to Scotland by that time.
He asked me, dad do you like my new football shirt, yes son, itâs great, but if you set foot outside this house with it on, your bags will be packed for you when you get home.
Man Utd looked better for having Ronaldo gone. Rashford is a smashing player, and he looked like he was assuming more responsibility. Martial seemed like he had lost his way and we hadnât really seen much of him in a while, but he looked like he was enjoying himself too. It remains to be seen if ETH can get Sancho going.
Man Utd have always been free with the cheque book. In recent years they have also wasted an enormous amount of money.
Itâs hard to say if the cupboard is now bare and it is loan deals only, until a new owner is onboard. We will see soon enough.
I was laughing yesterday when I saw how far out of his way ETH went in order to NOT pick Harry Maguire.
