Al-Sandcastle - the sportswashing barcodes

By far their best first transfer (for them) would be a certain Ribena loving older player of our acquaintance. Start with a professional culture and I don’t think there’s much better.

They can fuck off obviously though.

I don’t recall any big debates about Matip being sold - there were certainty discussions around whether we could rely on him, and therefore it being clear there was a need for another CB to be brought in - once Ibou was confirmed, I think pretty much everyone agreed that VVD, Gomez, Joel and Ibou fill our needs.

From there it was all about what happens to Ben Davies, Sepp, Rhys, and Nat. I have always been keen on Nat staying as I think he’s a no nonsense and reliable if needed, but many others were of the view that his stock is as high as it gets, so summer was the time to cashout.

As for selling to Newcastle, I think the convo’s are being had with a view that Newcastle are cash rich so may offer big bucks. Personally, I’d not sell them anyone except for say Karius and Div. Maybe Ox if he wants off.

Could Michael Edwards be tempted to work for them?

It’s all hypothetical, as there are no proper links to Liverpool players. The first question is would we do business with Newcastle? For me, the answer is a reluctant yes. Now that the decision has been made for their owners to be in, not doing business would be cutting our nose off to spite our face.

Next question is who? At that point, there’s an old adage that every player has a price, but obviously Newcastle are far enough down that they won’t be on our level for a while, even with all their money, so it’s hard to see any of our top players wanting a part of that.

The guiding principle I would employ would be anything that we think betters LFC.

So, if we sold a player we either didn’t want or need, and reinvested, fine. If we sold a player who was featuring but we reinvested the money and strengthened, again, fine. At that point it’s a footballing decision and we have a great team to decide that stuff.

Phillips? I would definitely sell, although I would imagine they would now want better.
Matip? I probably would not sell, since we took the time to get him right physically, and are now seeing him play and do well. Still, I’d listen to what they said, as we could strengthen the team if the proposed fee was high enough and we had a very good alternate lined up to come in.

What about Carol?

What about Achteberg?

What about Pep?

Wonder if Virgil would go to Newcastle?

Would the physio go?

Whats the point of all of this?

Also…

Reports that Edwards might leave came out a few months ago.

Why should they not be looking at one of the best if he is available.

Reports came out that he might leave a few months ago were down to his contract coming to an end. Empire of the Kop (far from knowing anything about anything) have suggested that it would be interesting to see what Edwards could achieve at Newcastle with an unlimited budget.

I’m merely saying the same shite that they’re saying regarding Carol, Pep etc. All a load of shit talk.

Edit: Ima backtrack @GermanRed - don’t do it often, but I agree that NUFC would be right to be looking at Edwards - I just have a feeling he wouldn’t do it to Liverpool - but then again, it’s likely I’m wrong. So apologies for being a bit ott on Edwards - but I still think it’s shit talk (from EoTK)

Sky reporting that Rodgers is their 1st target at the moment. Would cost them €16m to get him out of Leicester and it would pose no problems.

We’ll see.

Rodgers is a very good coach. From his time at Liverpool, not as hot on recruitment. Newcastle could do with a strong DOF as there’s a lot of work for them to do, and there are 2-3 cycles for the team to go through before they are at the top level.

£16m for Brodge, £8m to sack Bruce. £24m already down to be spent

There is another pathway for this where suddenly teams like City and PSG realise it makes sense to get right behind FFP and Newcastle’s ability to obliterate the opposition is constrained.

Apparently they already beginning to streamline things behind the scenes at Newcastle…

Would love it if they got Rodgers. Would rule out Edwards going there.

Not sure Newcastle would want Edwards anyhow…
They probably not looking to save money on players, when they can outspend anyone and just pay what they have to. As for the data analytics, surely they will just buy proven players as they go.
Different if FFP had any teeth in enforcing their own rules though, that’s when Edwards would be of value to them

If they get Rodgers it will take longer to get near the top and he hasn’t got the pulling power of the big name coaches.

I think Rodgers would be a smart appointment. He won’t take them to the promised land, but he’ll get them away from relegation and solidly top half.

Stevie G to Leicester?
