so a blonde-haired, blue eyed chairperson and a ginger manager. not really trying to deflect stereotypes, are they?
Ok Iâve never got Howe Iâve always thought he was average, but he got Bournemouth to the PL and they were ok there for a while, before going back down.
Letâs see how a perceived âgoodâ English coach gets on with unlimited resources.
I would imagine his job will be to take Newcastle from relegation fodder to Europa league, then theyâll attract the âHollywoodâ name manager etc
He got League 2 Bournemouth to the PL which is pretty impressive.
At one point Howe was favorite to succeed Wenger at Arsenal.
I think my opinion on Howe is tarnished by Solanke and Ibe
I rate Howe. Equally though Iâm not sure this is the right appointment for either party. Newcastle is a mess and thereâs only so much that can be done in January.
Obvious targets will be the likes of Coutinho and Hazard. I donât know if other PL clubs are going to do business with them, at least in January, so looking abroad still other potential targets could be Matthias Ginter, Belotti perhaps? Both out of contract in the summer. PL based Tarkowski might be an option (but see above)?
Midfield needs strengthening as well but not sure what options there are there that are realistic for January and would improve them. Barkley, maybe?
Again probably looking abroad. Kessie?
Can not see Coutinho (or Hazard) sign for them in January if Toon are still so deep in the relegation battle.
Solanke has done well in Championship.
Ye but to buy him at the price they paid for him ( donât remember what it was) in the PL was scandalous
It was around ÂŁ20m but it seems harsh to blame Howe for that considering he wouldnât have been negotiating the deal and it was Edwards on the other side.
Ye but if you have any fucking sense about you youâd see Solanke was worth about 7million tops.
To sanction a move for 19million was mental and so it proved to be
Hope people realize now that itâs more complex than just new owners, money on the table and things go better straight away. Itâs totally different to where and what Chelsea or City were at the moment of their big takeovers. Totally. Different.
I see Howe as a little bit of a desperate move out of free coaches who were willing to accept (after a few rejects). Good football, young, English, will get support from the start. But will it be enough and could it be wrong place wrong time? From his side also, youâd say he was waiting for more of a âprojectâ. Sounds like he wasnât getting those kind of offers. Maybe because of good reasons also.
I donât know if Lee Charnley is still there, probably is, but Howe will probably have to work directly with the owners. At a place which is now wildly excited and emotional. Plus, teaching a squad in the middle of a season after years of pretty much defensive football, to play attacking football. So, change/improve the playing style AND get points to survive. Difficult job ahead. Not impossible, but difficult.
Heâs not the only reason Bournemouth were relegated, but is one of the main ones. Transfers are not the only reason why they were relegated, but itâs also one of the main ones. I think him and them got away with some criticism last time because it was âcute little Bournemouthâ, nobody really dislikes them. But I said already at the time that itâs weird the number of weird transfers they got wrong.
Could be a long rest of the season for Newcastle and it wouldnât surprise me if it turns out that Eddie Howe isnât the only and last man in charge in that rest of the season.
Imagine the Newcastle fans
âYouâve just become the wealthiest football club in the worldâŚ.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Toon Army⌠your new manager⌠Eddie Howeâ
Fucking hell
It had to happen the way itâs happening.
There is no way Newcastle could tempt in a top manager and then go and spend ÂŁ400m in Jan to essentially rebuild the squad, given FFP. I assume that Mike Ashleyâs approach to managing the Toon will have an impact for 3-4 seasons in terms of what they can spend without breaching the rules.
All that said, the rules appear to be as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Alternatively, they could just not apply for a licence to enter UEFA competition.
Write off European competition for 3 years, build a team capable of first staying in the PL, then challenging for European places. PL FFP allows for a bit more spending than UEFA FFP so thatâs what I would do. They donât need to comply with UEFA FFP if theyâre not entering UEFA competitions, which theyâve got no chance of doing for next season at least anyway.
Interesting! But when theyâre ready to enter European competition, wonât UEFA be looking back 2-3 years, in which case they may be in breach anyway?
Either way, it all seems pretty flexible in terms of clubs finding loopholes etc.
Ah, but this season will be combined with last season, then the next two years would be looked at on the basis of whether any losses are diminishing and whether the club has viable proposals for meeting UEFA FFP breakeven requirements going forward, which by then they probably will have. Also, as a ânewâ (re)entrant to UEFA competition they will be given greater leeway anyway. This was one of UEFAâs relaxations to answer criticisms that UEFA FFP was creating a closed shop.
I donât see any chance in hell Howe keeps them up, if I was them Iâd have gone all-out to try to tempt Rafa back (it seems like heâs not terribly popular at Everton and both parties might appreciate a convenient out). Howeâs Bournemouth, while fairly easy on the eye, had a soft underbelly and Iâm not convinced of his credentials as a coach.
Theyâll probably throw 150-200 million at it in January and those 4-5 players will get them out of the shit.
Honestly, they should just have kept Bruce, give him the remit of getting them through the season, put a decent DoF in place to listen to him while thinking about where they want to be in two years. I am no big fan of his, but heâs competent enough at building a side that is difficult to beat, and the guys who are somewhat better at it than him (Allardyce, Pulis) are not compelling either. With an infusion of quality in January, they would probably have an uncompelling season but be in the transfer market to start moving up the PL table in June.
