Al-Sandcastle - the sportswashing barcodes

The results kept the Magpies at the foot of the top-flight table, without a win in any of their opening 13 games. For perspective, only one team in Premier League history has ever won a relegation battle — Derby County — having made such a poor start.

6 points to safety. Not impossible.

They have to get at least 4 points against Norwich and Burnley.

If not - it could look impossible at the end of the year. Games against Leicester, Liverpool, City and ManU all in December.

I always saw the appointment of Howe as a realisation from the owners that they believe Newcastle are doomed this year. If by chance he keeps them up bonus they go down hes a good fit to get them back.

After the expected hoo haa surrounding the takeover… its as though it would suit them to go down and spend a year in the championship background in the hope that the swell of opinion against them settles down a bit eh.!
Want Burnley to join them down there also though

The only bonus for them over previous pl relegation battles is that they can spend the maximum amount of money that PL FFP allows (about £200m for them?). The trick will be getting players that’s good enough and willing enough to make that switch. They can afford a genuine £100m player but that player is not going to them, so they probably be looking at the 30-50m players with a significant premium added.

They’re looking at paying 50m for 20m players

I look at the team(NUFC) and just wonder what 30,40,50m players will go there…I think it might be a dumping ground for old hasbeens…but that’s up to them…

They can have Naby or Origi for 50m.

Or Bobby Duncan for a cut-price 25M?

ha. Do we have a sell on fee clause for that idiot?

Yeah, they’ve got a big problem. Have allowed more goals than any other club, and just hired the wrong guy to fix that. Need to fix both offense and defense. Likelihood to do that in January? Not very good.

I wonder if they will create some problems for City and Chelsea. They might go after same players and push the price up.

Can’t see that being an issue. I don’t see how Newcastle get in the same conversations. Even if they could, what their squad needs probably means they can’t afford to bring those same players in.

It’s a prestige/ego issue, they will not operate on rational level. They will bid for players 1-2 levels above what they can realistically get/need.

Well they could if they are building for the future considering Chelsea buy about 40 youngsters a summer.

I’m pretty sure they are already beyond the prestige/ ego thing given recent comments on how different it the reality is compared to before they bought the club. Furthermore, I can’t think of any club with an ego problem hiring Eddie Howe as manager/head coach so quickly - it suggests they already recognise they have to cut their cloth accordingly. Now, there might be a tier of player above where they should be aiming for but it is very unlikely to be that of City and Chelsea.

Personally I think the notion of a bidding war in football is a bit of a myth. Players usually decide where they want to go, and it’s down to the clubs to meet on an acceptable price.

Guess that image wasn’t really helped by the Robinho situation, although in that particular one, he definitely had made up his mind… For the highest pay.

They are playing away at Leicester tomorrow and then have to come to Anfield on Thursday
