Alexis MAC ALLISTER: 2025/26

Whats he actually said is airing dirty washing.

I think you’re letting him off lightly. His form has been more than lacking, it’s been diabolical.
Last season he was generally good but nowhere near world class.

I do wonder, with actually reading what he said, that there is no intended malice and he was just replying to questions.

This is always the problem, ‘what was the question?’

To be honest, when it comes to Argentinian players playing at the highest level, I always expect them to play well in the season preceding World Cup in order to give themselves the best chance of being selected.

Mac Allister’s drop off in form this season has been one of the steepest I’ve seen in a Liverpool player, though, comparable to Fabinho or Henderson. I thought it was a long-term issue with his injury but apparently he’s been over it for quite a while. After looking undroppable last year, he knows looks like he might be the first candidate to be sold to fund the purchase of a more dynamic midfielder, whoever that might be. After all, you hear about contract negotiations with Gravenberch and Szoboszlai but Mac Allister’s new contract is never mentioned.

And here you are like clockwork trying to start a fight because I’ve had the temerity to post an opinion.

Why don’t you go away and stop hassling me every time I post anything.

I don’t think he did anything wrong. Players get asked questions and he really didn’t say too much beyond what he should have or the obvious - that the team were not too happy about where they are and the change has been too drastic.

What I found odd, was that on numerous reports of the interview most left out what I thought was a very important part (possibly to give a different feel).

This quote:
“Personally, without the team I am nothing and I feel like we all need to get better and think about the guy next to me, become a better team and that will help us and raise our level."

He’s 100% right about this. And it shouldn’t be read as a charge against Slot. It’s merely the truth, and I think everyone at the club, from fsg til the tea lady’s dog knows this by now.

We changed a lot? Yes, we did.

A few of the players who have left have been possibly his closest mates here. It’s also possible that he felt some of them weren’t good enough to be here long term.

The rest he prefers to keep for himself and not say publicly? That’s fine, even better.

I bet he’s not the only player who had or still has question marks over all the moves we’ve made recently.

“This should be a moment when we are enjoying the Premier League which we won and we should be in a much better place than we are,”

This actually hurts. When was the last time we heard ‘Champions’ ringing out from the stands ?

I don’t know who he is aiming that at, but if it isn’t squarely at himself he can fuck off.

Most players have dropped their level, but his has been bigger than anyone’s. I can’t believe it’s the same player I was worried about Real Madrid taking.

Brothers in arms. Kevin and Alexis both got the MotM awards in today’s final round of UCL group stage.

I would do a deal if it helped us sign a more robust, probably homegrown, midfielder. Mac Allister is a smashing player but I’m not sure the balance is right if Wirtz is playing in the 10 role. It looks to me as though we need a bit more muscle in there, Anderson or Wharton have been two that have been named, for example.

And in case anyone objects to me saying muscle, I don’t mean a limited player. They have to be able to play well, in particular passing well through the lines, while also offering a good physical presence.

You’d get rid of so many “smashing players”.

So many? I’m just talking about Mac Allister.

If we keep him, great, as he is a very good player. I’d love to keep all our good players. But in a world where we might not have an unlimited budget, and say need to do three signings (midfield, wing, defender) and possibly more, Mac Allister would not be untouchable for me. We do not have too many who would demand a good fee, who I would let go. I’d sell Gakpo too, if someone offered good money,

But keeping the focus on Mac Allister, it’s about midfield balance. If Wirtz is in there as the ten, I would like to see a more robust physical presence than Mac Allister behind him in the midfield. We are getting overrun far too much, and I would swap Mac Allister for Anderson or Wharton or someone of that ilk.

If we could keep Mac Allister and add someone like the aforementioned, so much the better. He is definitely a good player, but for me, given the needs I see, not indispensable.

Macca is our only physical presence in midfield. If you want more surely it’s Gravenberch one should be looking to replace first.
Do you watch when the opposition get a corner?
Who gets yellow cards for physical interventions?

I’m not Macca’s biggest fan. I didn’t understand why we recruited him. However he gives us a physical presence noone else does.
I could understand if the problem seen was positioning, off ball movement, speed, size but physical presence .
Even with all his weaknesses he’s no worst than Gravenberch in most of them he even, despite his size, manages to head the ball.

I think the question is whether 2026/27 Mac Allister is going to be 2024/25 Mac Allister or 2025/26 Mac Allister. Because I’d keep the former in a heartbeat, and sell the latter.

He has looked an absolute shadow of the player he can be this year and we need to know if it’s a one off, or whether this is now the player.

Yeah completely agree with this. This is a really strange season, and I wouldn’t judge any player based on it. In my book, next season will be the moment of truth for Macca, and also for some other players.

I’m joking, referring to how often you called one of our players a smashing one.
