It could also be that the club are waiting on the German Cup final, on Saturday, that would free up HoeneB. Hope in the heart, and all.
This reminds me of everyone being so certain we were just waiting for Palace to play their UEFA qualifier, and then the Charity Shield before moving on Guehi
If the Enrique news is true, the bookies next favourite seems to be Iraola from Sky and PP.
Excuses
- 99% sure Jota will be mentioned again.
- Injuries (We already have 1 baked in).
- World Cup (Obviously ignoring the fact that itās open to all teams).
- Transfers.
I think most those of those are easily dismissed - the transfer policy is in our control, and even though I think weāve had bad luck with injuries, the size of the squad and the players we have targeted are a choice.
However I hate to see Jotaās death being waved away as excuse making.
Weāve all to greater or lesser extents put the tragedy behind us and settled into lashing out at our chosen targets for the shitshow of a season. I have, and other posters have justifiably pointed out to me that earlier on I was calling for restraint and sympathy. I get it that itās hard to maintain patience and at some point you just have to vent a little. Iām as guilty of that as anyone.
However I would not be surprised in a few years time to hear players reflecting on what a mentally draining slog this season was, and I wouldnāt be surprised to learn that Jotaās death was a lot harder to deal with than weāve assumed.
People have lost others a lot closer than Jota was to any of the squad. I get there is an effect but not as much as maybe you are suggesting 10 months on from the loss of diogo and his brother.
I think we won most games in preseason and the first 5 league games, right?
Maybe opponents went easy on us because of Diogos passing. Where would we be without those 15 points?
I see it the other way. Jotaās death has been used as an excuse, and I think itās pretty disrespectful to essentially lay the blame on his passing for why this coach and these players canāt do their jobs adequately. Some of them were very close friends with him no doubt but the idea that grown men are so overcome with emotion that they physically canāt function because a work colleague died 9 months ago is silly.
I think itās cynical and the repeated use of it in the media reads to me that itās getting briefed to them by someone inside the club.
I understand pre-season was disrupted which isnāt helpful but there has been more than enough time now to catch up on that lost time yet it gets worse not better.
Stop looking for sympathy. Stop looking for excuses. Get the fucking job done.
We won the league the season after Hillsborough.
You may be right, and signs have definitely been pointing that way for a little while. I just think that something has shifted again, more recently.
Weāll know one way or the other soon enough!
Jotaās passing made everything infinitely worse, but the warning signs were already there.
The team has been on a steady decline since February/March of last year.
For me, the use of Jotaās death would have been seen as a catalyst if we won the league as well. We got it together for our mate stuff.
It affected the players and staff. But as @Sweeting says, its not an excuse.
Are we going attempt to Sack slot and then fail?
He just silently nods at the news and shows up to work next day anyway, like George Costanza. I could see Slot doing that.
I donāt quite know what to make of that. Or that fact that it got 11 likes.
Iād rather we just didnāt talk about it. Itās too big a deal to used as a way of going back and forth on a stupid internet forum.
All I was saying was if we going to take the piss out the club putting stupid excuses out there for the season, thatās fine. But donāt include Jotaās death in with that. Whatever we think about it is probably best kept to ourselves at this point.
At this point coming back to Jotaās death is rehashing old arguments, which have been addressed.
But then this whole thread is like that, so I should just continue to just ignore it.
Iāve long felt uncomfortable with the references to Diogoās death as an excuse for our sporting performances. It seemed almost disrespectful to his memory to bring it up months later as an excuse for why we looked like shit against Forest and PSV, but not bring it up when we beat Real Madrid or Inter.
For the last two+ years, Iāve watched in horror as loved ones have been murdered in Gaza in the midst of a genocide. I have had family members attacked, shot, and killed at other points of my life. Iāve had family members die suddenly in accidents and other tragedies. I, myself, have been assaulted, stalked, threatened, and attacked because of my race and religion.
All of it weighs on you. All of it feeds despair. And many times, you donāt even realize how these things are unconsciously devastating your mental health - even years later. Sometimes the slightest thought will keep me up at nights. Watching the news is torture.
Just recently, three Muslims were murdered in a mosque in San Diego, and I couldnāt help but think about the armed guards outside of my local mosque and Islamic School, where I have family members working as teachers.
I know that this fear will eat at my mental health. So even as I thrive in an incredibly challenging and demanding profession, and even as Iām blessed to have health and a wonderful family around me, I know that my mental health will be impacted by these various traumas in ways I cannot totally anticipate or plan for.
So I can understand why people bring up Diogo. But I think itās best for us to acknowledge it without fixating on it as an excuse. Itās there, but thereās nothing that any of the players can do about it. They need to focus on what they can control - their performances on the pitch. The head coach needs to focus on what he can control - his tactics and man management and in-game decisions.
And I think we should focus on that here, because thereās no point in deliberating over the unknown.
