I wonder why? Some have speculated that Edwards/Hughes thought Alonso would command too much power and influence here and they didn’t want to have to deal with another Klopp-like figure, which sounds ridiculous to me.
I think if the club wanted Alonso we would have tied him up. He was there, ready and available. I’m not sure what shifted from when he was the front runner but chose Real Madrid. Maybe we are proud, and don’t like to be sloppy seconds for anyone? Or maybe we genuinely did expect to back Slot, only now if we make the change, it is because things have accelerated in that direction quite a lot the last few days or so?
Maybe for the decision makers, Iraola/Hoeness/Whoever profile favorably in relation to Alonso?
You’re probably right. Obviously, they could have had Alonso now if they wanted. I just hope that it’s an objective assessment of the available coaching talent, rather than ego, that’s driving their refusal to consider Alonso. He might have been the perfect fit here, but I can accept them going for Hoeneß or Iraola if the data points in that direction (as I did when they hired Slot).
Of course, Enrique would be the dream, but it doesn’t look likely at the moment.
At least in Iraola’s case the data they’re looking at is captured from the PL rather than the Eredivisie…
The more I think about it, the more I think Edwards and Hughes don’t want another manager who’ll end up wanting more power. They want a coach.
Been saying this all the time.
That’s a sackable mentality, though. If they just want a yes man at the helm, then they should go with Slot because they’re ultimately accountable for his appointment. That’s the risk they take with that kind of ego-driven approach.
The biggest hint Slots going (for me) is theres no new contract in sight.
You cant let a manager you “want” enter final year of his deal.
He won the league that should have been enough to earn a new contract. But then Diogo passed away and we had other priorities in the summer. After that we had a shit season. Now it makes no sense to extend his contract.
Either they are going to keep him in position next season, with no extension, to see what’s what. If he does well I’m sure an extension will be offered, but right now it’s not on the table as there are so many question marks.
Or, more likely, it will come to a conclusion very soon.
Iraola for me. Though since we’ve been linked with Hoeness too I have looked into him a bit and would be happy with that choice. I think I just slightly lean in the direction of a man who has done it in the Prem, since the competitive depth in this league is unique.
I’ve been saying that, too. The lack of an extension is a clue that they don’t feel as secure in him as they claim.
I do wonder if there’s some sort of unspoken agreement with Klopp that he’d come here in a year after taking some time away. Or Enrique? That could explain why they won’t sack Slot but also won’t extend him.
Let’s wait and see what’s happens on Monday/Tuesday.
It’s the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, here in the States.
It might have an added meaning this time - a day to remember Slot’s title, as he moves on.
They are also out of contract in a year, so that would be even more stupid.
Of course you can. Happens all the time
Well they sacked Rodgers on a Sunday morning there.
Afternoon. After the Everton game
Yeah but it was morning in America. Well maybe lunch as it broke around 4pm but then.
Where’s Tony Barrett when you need him.
