Yes, I was thinking if Slot put Grav as the 3rd CB to play 343 it’d be just like what Rodgers did with Can. Feels like we are closer to the slip of 2014-15 than the bad title defend of 2020-21.
We also lost so much athleticism in the team that Klopp built up, and I still don’t know what’s the solution to have all of Wirtz, Isak, Ekitike and Salah on the pitch together.
A black mark against Slot imo. Hung a young lad out to dry but allows senior pro’s to turn in dogshit performances every game and stay on the whole 90 minutes.
And he is lost, as he doesn’t know the answer presently.
If you’re on a roadway, and you’re lost as to where to turn, that doesn’t mean that you won’t eventually find your way. It just means that, at the moment, you’re lost.
He won the title first season. That buys a lot of patience. We have a fantastic array of talent. It hasn’t found its level yet, for various reasons, but we’ve every right to expect more to come. The new team is not fully built either. It needs work in central defence, a Salah replacement, and probably a deep lying midfielder.
I understand that, and I totally get the criticism. The criticism is par for the course.
But we’re now starting to see the ‘I hate him and I want him fucking gone now’ comments, even on this forum - just a handful of comments, but said with such conviction and vitriol, that the only conclusion I think you can draw is that there are a minority of people who never wanted him, have been waiting for a dip, and him winning the league must have been a massive blow.
Something came to mind from the time shortly before we signed Slot. Someone remarked that Slot had never lost two games in a row in his coaching career, which was received very encouragingly and positively by many here. Until someone (I don’t remember who it was) raised an objection that I now consider very appropriate and good, namely… that the downside of this, of course, is that we unfortunately don’t really know how he would react in a crisis situation.
Well… now it seems like we’re going to find out. From the looks of it, he has no experience with crisis management so far, and that’s why I have my doubts.
That’s a fair response. I’m inclined to give Slot a longer leash as well, though it comes with a couple caveats.
First, while I don’t need to see the final product, I do need to see progress towards it. We’ve been seeing the same issues over and over again. That needs to be worked out. We need to find solidity and for fucks’ sake, we need to learn how to defend set pieces.
Second, that the players remain strong, together, positive, and motivated. I don’t want to see a series of leaks which imply that Slot has lost the trust or the respect of his players. I don’t want to see division and finger pointing.
The latter issue tends to sink managers when there is a sustained run of poor form. Fortunately, we have a lot of hardworking professionals and upstanding characters and leaders, so I’m hopeful that they’ll keep things in check as Slot works through the solutions.
That has nothing to do with Slot losing the trust and respect of his players. That is a matter of players wanting to establish accountability among each other, without being seen as complaining to ‘the boss’
While I understand that our performance has not been this great since March, I am not really of the opinion that Slot must go, Klopp must come back etc etc. Winning the league with an existing squad is not easy as well, although it may look in hindsight. Last season was supposed to be our transition season. It wasn’t. This season is. We should atleast give him some time to work this out. We have faced some injury issues as well. Ideally having Grav, Alisson might have helped as they have been the spine of Slot’s team last season. And it’s not just because he won the league, any manager deserves some time to implement his ideas.
Again I am worried myself I’ll not deny that. Things don’t look good. I can see there’s currently no style, no improvements, we look clueless with and without the ball and all.. just that it’s still a small period to be looking at manager change despite all that.
We probably went the Chelsea/ Utd way in spending on some players without strategy (assumption based on what we see today). I hope we don’t follow that with more of constant manager changes in short periods and then the cycle of managers wanting their own players and so on.
