Klopp as a package of coach + the person he is, is a rare one.
We cannot expect that every head coach we have will be world class at what he should do, but then also universally likeable, funny, a second father to everyone, someone who touches on matters outside football with skill and sense, part time philosopher and whatever else.
And Liverpool being a global club, if people disagreed on previous coaches like Rafa or today Slot, it’s absolutely natural.
I’m not 100% sure where the best place to put this is but considering this thread probably has more traffic and what I’m thinking is not only about Slot but his predecessor and the people around them I thought I’d stick it here.
It was fairly well documented that Klopp and Edwards disagreed over Jordan Henderson. Klopp wanted to keep him whilst Edwards believed he was past his peak and wanted to move him on.
Now obviously we’ve got Hughes in the position Edwards was in but I would be shocked if they haven’t spoken about this after Salah did that interview.
When Klopp left we were told that instead of one person having so much say that Slot would be more of a head coach and Hughes (and God knows how much extent Edwards will have) will be more involved with transfers and contracts.
What I’m wondering is that not only given the performances this season but also the questions as to whether we (or at least Slot atm) can get the most out of our new players who we spent a fortune on if Salah remains. We’ve seen it a lot this season where players have looked for Salah before anyone else.
I am probably doing him a massive disservice here but if there is a possibility of getting a high enough bid from Saudi I have an image in my head of Edwards rubbing his hands together ala one of those Dastardly and Muttley cartoons. If we manage to start getting results between now and the end of AFCON and there is interest from Saudi how much interference might the people upstairs put themselves towards the situation instead of it being totally Slot’s choice?
This might be even more important if we are looking to buy someone like Semenyo and we might need to try and balance the books?
Has Mo apologised?
Have you spoken to Mo since Inter?
How many conversations do you expect to have with Mo this weekend?
& the weekend after that?
Will Mo be part of the squad this weekend?
What did you make of Carra’s comments on Mo?
As of 09:32:21am this morning, how would you best describe your relationship with Mo?
& in more than a word?
Will you be wishing Mo well at AFCON before he jets off?
Will you be keeping close tabs on Mo whilst he’s at AFCON?
Will you look to sell Mo in Jan?
Or maybe the summer?
Were you any closer to identifying who Mo was referring to when he said “someone at the club doesn’t want me here”?
To me this is very understandable as our modus operandi is to use stats when assessing players, add this to Mo’s age and it would be only right for them, being responsible for player movements, to see if there is a market for Mo especially on his wages ,that’s business.
Mo feels because of what he has done over the last 8 years he deserves time, I understand his point of view but for me, let their legs go on someone else’s pitch, is what is right for LFC
Keita’s numbers before and the eye test was very good, after no.
We also don’t just base it on numbers we look at a players personality and it is combination of what stats say, the scouts and in the past Jurgen had input, that is from Ian Graham
I know we did it with the best of intentions. Sometimes they work out sometimes they don’t.
Attitude is important. Have they got that fire in their belly naturally?
For example, if Gakpo had Diaz’s natural drive he would be a fearsome player.
I’m also inclined to think that Isak deal didn’t make sense at all if there was a clearcut plan im developing our gameplay. At that stage where we lost Jota and then sold Diaz, I thought we would target an up and coming striker with tons of energy for pressing, as Ekitike was effectively Nunez’s replacement. The fact that we extended two wingers suggested we wouldn’t suddenly play 442 or with a lurking central forward while we already had Wirtz. I even thought Wirtz would play the Firmino/Merino/whoever false 9 Spain and PSG have’s role eventually.
And so I feel for Salah a bit in this, but not agree with his outburst of course. He’s made to be the sacrificing piece, instead of having the tactics evolved to suit him. All the business jazz of ‘let him be someone’s else problem’ rings hollow when Hughes and Edward brought the problems in first.
Why should the tactics be evolved to suit a single player - especially a 33 year old with one year left on his deal - instead of them being evolved to suit the entire team, especially the players brought in for the long term?
