Arne Slot - Head Coach

100%. We’ve always been a late goal type of team but it was usually after an electric counter after our opposition was pressuring for an equalizer or we’d been applying serious pressure since the 70th minute anyway

Just saw the result…

Slot out, then? But for whom?

Jose Arnemando Slotinho?

Slot’s brain was fried after the PSG loss, unfortunately.

Alonso, or anyone with better feats and name recognition than Slot before the beginning of last season.

I don’t see @Mascot’s arguments the same way most seem to here.

He did exceptionally well last season. Something has gone seriously off piste this season to which there are probably a number of contributing factors.

For me, the lack of any observed evidence in anything changing is my major concern. And I’m glad whether he stays or goes is not my decision.

I don’t see where @Mascot is arguing that.

This seems pretty clear to me.

But you are pointedly avoiding the core of his argument, re “we can know nothing of the paths not taken”, as in----- “any decent coach would’ve won the league with us”

Everything you’ve said here is spot on. The only thing missing, which is what gives me pause, re Slot, is the why?

WHY?

We all watch football and we know what we see. We are miles off where we were last season. But why?

Why are our running stats down?
Why can we not play at or sustain high intensity?
Why is our pressing so innefective and bad?
Why is our defending prone with errors?
Why are we so open?

None of the above was an issue just 8-10 months ago.
Why are they now in the gutter?

It’s looking like a mystery for the ages.
Yes, we can blame Arne, we can also blame the players, or other factors. I’ve yet to see one coherent argument here that gives a definitive answer.

We have skipped music entirely and moved to interpretive dance.

Its a huge mystery to me. These are the kind of stats you see from a team at the end of its natural cycle, and tired of hearing the same voice. Except that ours has barely begun!

I suspect that the club leadership know the answer to the question…

That was probably the January decision and they gambled on the CL qualification. Now it’s too late to make a decision that will realistically make a difference. A new coach will be stuck with the mental and physical condition that this team is currently in, and with little time to change the mental and zero time to change the physical.

Yes, but players have lost all belief. This is evident in interviews following the match. The fans have also lost belief. A new voice and presence in the dressing room can pay huge dividends for the rest of the campaign. Could it get worse? Sure, but I think that is unlikely. What we need is a spark for the rest of the season, something that invigorates the squad and the fans. We need something to feel positive about and get behind before heading into the summer. That will also help with potential incomings. Whether that is a caretaker manager (Stevie or similar), or the next long-term manager (Alonso, etc.) doesn’t really matter to me. If we get to the end of the season without silverware and without top 4/5, that is unacceptable. Honestly, i don’t care about silverware this season. We don’t deserve it and it’s delusional to think we will win any of the two trophies to play for. Top 4/5 is far more important in the long term at this point.

I am still happy to cut the guy some slack. Kelleher knows the players far better than any of us and so it appears Arne has faced an uphill battle all season.

Kelleher: "Football isn’t the priority for Liverpool this year." Former Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, now thriving at Brentford, has shared an incredibly powerful and emotional perspective on the current struggles at Anfield.

When the autobios are written then I suspect we might all have a different perspective on this season.

I’m not sure about this. I think more than anything else these players look mentally shot. Some of them look gone physically, like Mac Allister and Salah. But a lot of them look really lacking in belief. Especially around the last fifteen minutes.

We don’t have to be brilliant to get in the top four. We just have to be better that Villa and Chelsea and they are both shit. If Alonso is as good as he is cracked up to be, getting the modest improvement should be within reach.

The decision would have been fine in January and should of been made to get rid of him imo, it is now too late and the only change would be psychological that could go either way. The management made a decision (I think) to wait till the end of season for whatever reason(*), and they have to stick with it.

(*)

  1. He can turn it around.
  2. Nobody available for immediate availability.
  3. Could not agree contract with people approached.
  4. Nobody suitable.
  5. Cost/benefit analysis.
  6. etc.

That’s a cop out of note and a quote from quite a while ago. Massive pinch of salt with that one

Last month… so you believe him to be lying when he said that. You don’t think he is still in touch and speaking to his ex team mates?

A cop out to say they are still affected by Jota’s death..? You know that do you?
