Another amazing thing about Tesla. They don’t advertise……
I am not sure if this point has been raised already but I believe as individuals we can do so much more and further more educate our children, personally and through schools.
It is acceptable as Human beings, irrelevant of how much we care that we will leave the lights on, have the heating on when we are not in and boil the kettle numerous times before making a cup of tea, but we should do better.
We need to educate children to turn lights off, turn their IPads off, Tv’s, etc. How many times do you walk into your child’s room to find the Tv and games console on, how many times do you find a tablet on the floor still on?
I know there is a big drum being banged about giving our children a future and rightly so, I just feel people don’t actually understand that the smallest of things add up.
A genius, apparently.
Hasn’t he left the board of Tesla. I have a foggy memory of something like that.
Quite like this guy:
The Pew Center published a graph that highlights the bollocks that Musk is tweeting, and demonstrably the Democrats have veered very slightly left, while the Republicans have moved to the right 4x further.
The Republicans are massively more responsible for the polarization in American politics.
The Democrats (sans progressive wing) are not too far off Reagan’s Republican Party. They are not really getting anywhere with it though, to my mind. I would like to see the progressive wing win the battle and come to the fore, to give the American electorate a real choice.
By European standards the current choice in America is between a left wing Democrat party that is right of the UK Conservative party, and a right wing Republican Party that is actually somewhere to the right of Mussolini.
What I am arguing against is the great man hero myth, where one man most popularly associated with something good is treated as the sole reason for that. It’s a simple easy to digest narrative that is never actually true.
Telsa is a company that existed before he became interested in it. Despite being first movers (pre-Musk) and it being the only thing they do are still only responsible for only responsible for 10% of the EVs in use globally. Moving forward they have serious issues to overcome to become a viable car company meaning there is guarantee at all they are going to be a part of the EV future.
So you say I am talking down Musk’s achievements due to a personal dislike of him, and I flip that. Musk’s greatest achievement is self promotion, the sort that makes people give him credit for things he’s talked about before he’s achieved it, and over state what he’s achieved. One such example being describing their status in the EV market as domination - they are market leaders, but by only a small amount with near 90% of the market filled by competitors.
Until 2018 was Chairman of the board and CEO. He was made to step down from his chairmanship under and agreement with the SEC over market manipulation. See my earlier comment (#111)
Cheers
Just seen a clip where he basically thinks he was set up by the SEC on that one.
Musk was not a founder, that’s true. But he near as damn it was there at the start. The company was founded in July 2002, by the April he was the largest shareholder and chair of the board.
There are a few good interviews with Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning (The founders). They are quite candid, and there is a bitterness regarding Musk. Irrespective they describe Musk investing when others would not (EVs seen as a joke at the time). They describe his bloody mindedness in the details and technical decisions. Despite not seeing eye to eye (as Musk forced them out) they recognise the company Tesla is today would not have been possible without him.
You dismiss market share implying it should be higher as one of the first movers. But that’s nuts. It’s absurd because GM and Honda had already sold electric vehicles (EV1 and EV plus). Car companies had hundreds of millions in terms of research budgets every year, the existing capital investment in infrastructure and brand recognition. Disruption of this is an incredible feat. It not like we have a wave of EV manufacturers displacing Ford, Honda, BMW and VW. It would be like me starting a digital technology company today and in 20 year time outselling Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft.
In the US the number of newly registered battery EVs. Tesla were 79% 2020, 70% 2021 and so far 75% in 2022. For me that’s dominating. Those numbers would be higher if they could meet demand (big backlog) worldwide. In most European countries Tesla cars hold top and second best selling EV. I should clarify I tend to think of electric cars being those that use a battery only. ie not your typical Prius that has a petrol engine (hence discrepancy in numbers).
It’s a bit like Alex Ferguson. Dislike the man. Dislike the club. But he is undoubtedly one of the most important managers in the modern era. He made United one of the most valuable clubs in world football. Sure there are other key individuals at united but he was the key differentiator.
No he wasn’t. Rupert Murdoch was.
I thought it was Howard Webb?!
There was a very interesting interview with Bill Gates on Radio 4’s Today programme this morning.
Well worth tracking down.
You’re only saying that because you have been injected with implants that are controlling your thoughts.
Funnily enough, that’s one of the things he mentions in the interview.
Hmmm
Any summary? He must be promoting a book as I heard him on one of my favourite podcasts earlier this week. That was mostly about pandemic preparedness and he really refused to bite when pressed on Musk related Billionaire activities.
For a while now, one of the largest shareholders of twitter has been a Saudi investment group, that is almost exclusively run and funded by one of the princes. He initially opposed Musk’s takeover on the basis of valuation, but now appears to have come around and has agreed to roll over his near 2 billion stake into the new private ownership rather than cashing out. This is him publicly praising Musk’s vision for the company.
Difficult to know what to make of this, and it can likely be used as a Rorschach test about your thoughts on this whole situation. On the one hand he looks to be using this fund as a way to diversity his holding and get away from oil money and this deal could be solely based on maximizing value of this investment. He is one of the dissidents arrested and held captive by MSM in Ritz Carlton Gate several years ago, so not exactly the mouthpiece of the Kingdom. On the other hand, if you are one of the people who looks past Musk’s juvenile comments about “free speech” and is skeptical about his genuine commitment to it then getting the seal of approval of a Saudi Prince probably wont fill you with joy.
That might have been because of the recent comments by Musk in the media where he attacked Gates for holding a short position on Tesla?
