It’s a $90,000 vehicle. And it’s the first in a new range that is being marketed to performance junkies. It’s exactly Tesla’s market. Except without the Musk ball sucking.
However, the bigger point is Tesla’s success in the market, which as a car company is still pretty limited, has been driven by the inability of the major’s to really get on board with electric leaving the field pretty much open. Ford finally did, and the lightening is the first evidence of that.
My friend ordered a lightning. He could easily buy a Tesla, has a few cars. It has a feature that can act as a generator to power the house, and that sold him on the Lightning, as he has a cabin in the mountains and the four wheel drive, ground clearance and utility of a truck, plus the generator thing, sold him.
The F150 is one of the biggest selling vehicles in America, and the range is huge, from lower end workhouses to upper end F150 trucks which are easily the price of a Tesla. Ford could nab a good chunk of the electric vehicle pie with this.
One small little detail everyone is missing is that the world in 50 years will be a burning fireball, with droughts never seen before, floods engulfing cities, bushfires that kill thousands, all as the new “normal”.
There will be no going to distant planets.
There will be no way to “technology” ourselves out of this future. Collapse is coming.
The culture we live in is to blame, starting 10,000 years ago. The billionaires are not helping things, and anyone who looks up to them is deluded.
Should have stayed in the caves, mud huts and hovels (some would say United have. We’ve done this to death, we only survive as a species if we leave this planet. And yes we can do that tomorrow (metaphorically) whilst we fix this planet’s problems. We won’t so enjoy the world’s biggest potential firework, I will and do. I just finished the last of a bottle of washing up liquid and had a vivid memory of me mithering my mum for empty ones (and once getting roasted for emptying one early one morning into the bin, fool) so I could build model rockets. Elon is just a richer version of me, good on him.
We only survive as a species if we learn to live within the planets limits.
This obsession with colonising Mars is fucking batshit. Unfortunately the pace of our technology to actually establish a viable presence on Mars is significantly lagging behind the escalation of the Climate Crisis.
I’d love to think of there being people out amongst the stars, but at the rate we’re going society is going to collapse long before we get there. At what would be the point anyway? Without a fundamental realignment of human consciousness that places living in harmony with the the planet(s) that support us, anywhere we go we’re just going to end up trashing. Is that what we want to be? Universal Locusts?
Agreed. Humans are designed to live here on Earth. Mars might be nice in the movies but the reality would be a hell hole. Lots of fun living in a box I’m sure.
Our ability to create the technology to reach Earth 2 beyond our solar system will not happen before we’ve trashed this one at the rate we’re going.
I think one of the problems with the human condition is that we see ourselves as apart from the Earth. We exist, and the Earth is just where we live.
The reality is that we are the Earth. As is all life. We’re a small bit of the Earth that developed consciousness. Every bit of chemistry and biology that we are built from is a product of this planet.
I think if people could get their heads around this, we might have a chance.
I’d never thought of it that way but you’re 100% right.
My gut says that we can only make this work with some sacrifice. Too many won’t take that step for various reasons.
That leaves using other mechanisms to force behavioural changes. I wonder what impact the current energy crisis us having for example? Sadly those that use the most won’t change
Absolutely, no question there. We’ll still do it before we get everybody in the world to work together for our common good though. Utopian bliss is a sci-fi dream and will always continue to be so whilst the dreamers are genetically driven to have things and preferably better than their neighbour’s new BMW. That leads to two thought streams. The first is to steal that new car. The other is to work harder to earn the money to buy a better one. I’ll never say that all the rich people in the world are the latter but I’m pretty sure Musk is. There are people who don’t care and are just happy on a flat line. They’re never the one who employ hundreds of thousands of people.
Exactly. The only person who can currently get us from planet A to planet B (shit hole though it is) is being castigated. He’s not adversely affecting the future of the human race. Unless you think that future revolves around Twitter.
But why leave this beautiful planet for which we are uniquely suited in order to inhabit one for which we are not?
Why not use all those resources to design a lifestyle that doesn’t destroy the only planet we know on which we can live?
It doesn’t make any sense at all.
But he won’t. Thinking that our future is on Mars when he, those of his pay grade and politicians could really look at fixing real world issues here.
Na we’ll burn it cause there’s money to be made. Outside the importance that we as humans have put on money means naff all. It means nothing to my dog. She deals in balls, of the tennis variety.
if it happens, you and me and any of your descendents arent getting a ticket to that rodeo my friend…
what do you seriously think will happen to earths resources if the elite rich can relocate themselves to a distant nirvana?..
it’d be like ancient religion realised…the gods up there, demanding sacrafices to bring the right weather…
what should be happening…is we should be spending every vital second thinking how to SAVE this planet, not designing a get out clause for the elite few…
we are fucked if we cant see that…fucked.
what issue would say, Putin Jnr have, or Musk jnr, or Bezos jnr, if they were camped up on mars and we didnt do exactly what we were asked to do…the only reason we havent seen a nuclear bomb dropped is becuase those with thier fingers on the trigger would need to live through the consequences…
if that lot and thier ilk are up there, theyd probably do it just to see what happens…
nah…im not liking this race to mars by individuals one little iota…
It’s a perfectly reasonable point. Imagine if we lived on Mars only and could see a literal Eden (earth) through a telescope. THAT would be a reason to burn a planet to get to paradise. But Elon’s activities in Texas are doing nothing of the sort.
Eventually this planet will become uninhabitable. Before that happens, we need to settle other planets. It’s that simple. I refer you to Sir Edmund Hillary, because it’s there. That’s the spirit of human endeavour and discovery, a most noble and admirable trait IMHO. Unless you’re a flat earther obviously.
