Breaking News Thread (Part 1)

The most consequential news anywhere:

Likely to mean unprecedented change for everyone living in the region and those everywhere else in the world. I fear for our children and grandchildren.

I, too fear for future generations, but with all the lunatics around hellbent on fucking the world up, it is becoming terrifying!

Absolutely horrendous. 8 children, between the ages of 1-14, who will never get to enjoy life. But it’s not the guns.

This country is well and truly fucked right now. I pray the midterms bring in massive change and healing. If not, I may have to leave.

About ten minutes ago there was a 7.4 earthquake of Japan’s north east coast.

There’s a tsunami warning for 3 meter tsunami. It’s said to be arriving imminently. A 3 meter tsunami is serious. Having said that, I am not seeing the fishing boats getting out of the harbor.

Of course, people are being told to evacuate.

Nothing’s happened so far. Maybe it’ll turn out to be a lot less than was originally thought. As is often the case with tsunamis.

Lets hope so! Japan is also so very prepared for these smaller tsunamis and hopefully there will be no loss of life and only minor damage and inconvenience.

I read somewhere that “Firearm related injuries are the #1 cause of death for children and teens in the USA. Has been for two or three years now. Not motor vehicle injuries, not cancers, etc. Firearms.”

Minor inconvenience was all there was, but there was a major alert. I saw live footage of one port that had about eight large ships almost in a line all heading out to sea so they would not caught in the harbour.

We could all learn from how the Japanese handle natural disasters. Planning, order and clear communication: things you certainly can no longer say are ubiquitous in the world of disaster management.

Monbiot is exactly right -

Hmmm, it seems that you have forgotten about how the Fukushima disaster was handled. It’s not that long ago.

No not forgotten just focusing on the natural disaster part. The nuclear power plant debacle I’d call man-made - both in its conception and handling - wrt what I was saying.

Well this is significant. A runner in the London Marathon has broken the 2 hour limit for the first time. It’s one of those psychologically significant ones like the ten second 100 metres or four minute mile:

Sabastian Sawe, a Kenyan (naturally!), will end up there with Roger Bannister, assuming that the conditions are determined to be record permissible.

Not sure why weather conditions would be an issue. London has clear blue skys, and a mild 19 degrees celcius

Maybe it will be ruled out for being wind assisted…

It can happen. Living in Dundee, the wind was always in your face - whichever corner you turned!

Not been any wind in Central London, not sure about S/E and East London

Could have been quite a lot of hot air in some places…

That clock tower is leaning quite a bit, must be due to high winds!
