I’ve cut right down on flying, mostly environmental, and a small part due to this sort of thing getting more commonplace. I have to go to LA in the not-too-distant future, and I am not looking forward to having my safety in the hands of these careless idiots.

Moldova is in an extremely precarious position. Ukraine has been and is, their shield. RU have (as readers likely know) attempted several coups lately, both in Moldova and in Romania. With NATO deterrence in serious doubt, these are Flash Points which can trigger when RU now becomes more adventurous as the US will not intervene.

Russia is calling everyone’s bluff and they are winning. Even before Trump, they saw that no one can do shit to them. And now with the joker American president, they are further emboldened. They are now basically saying to Europe, other than talking and ineffective sanctions, what else can you do?
This almost feels like a war needs to be started to end another one. But I hope not

This situation is extremely complex and is evolving rapidly. Even an agile and flexible leadership would be challenged. I wouldn’t rush to judgement until we see how things develop in the next couple of weeks.
So much that has been the bedrock of the world’s security order has been destroyed in the last few days that it’s bound to take some time to readjust.

They have had months to prepare in reality, but I agree that the shock is vast. I have written about it too and not optimistically. The conversation and the idea using frozen RU assets are not from yesterday either, but years ago.
The problem is that the idea being pandered here, is unrealistic and silly. Why would Russia want to agree to it ? That is the question one needs to answer. The most important one of all. Where is the leverage ? Why would they agree to a cease fire in the air, when it makes no sense for them ? The point is that the idea is silly and a silly idea is worse than no idea.

The sanctions are not really ineffective. Their effect is just not fast enough.
The Russian war economy is overheated and is facing a cliff. The problem is just that Ukraine does not have that much time now that the US is doing what it is doing.
WTF is a ‘air and sea’ truce for the war where drones changed everything? The concept is prima facie laughable, but also incredibly out of touch
