Breaking News Thread

Writ large, it probably has to happen. A US that will elect Trump just isn’t a truly reliable ally anymore, even leaving aside their priorities shifting to the Pacific. But most of the European nations have an enormous amount of work and investment to have any meaningful capability, particularly if you take Britain out of the equation. France is the only European nation with any real power projection capacity.

Probably should leave that to Ursula, she’s done an amazing job with the Bundeswehr.

This discussion probably belongs in the EU thread as it involves long term political changes rather than breaking news. I’ll post my reply there.

To be honest with you as easy as it is to get a gun in America and how crazy some people are I’m amazed it doesn’t happen more

Despite the fact it shouldn’t happen at all? :astonished:

It does happen more. The worst thing is that most gun crime goes unreported.

Ye but what I’m saying is if you can go into a store and buy for example - a semi automatic assault rifle with relative ease I’m not really surprised it happens.

But then if the country wants to cling on to a “right” that was written 150 years ago when guns then were nothing like guns are today then sorry it doesn’t surprise me

If it is ok to look down (rightly) at folks wanting to practice laws written 1500-2000 years ago, i.e. the Taliban for example, why not the same for folks that want to support the 2nd amendment?

hate to be the bearer of bad news. the list for 2021 is LOOOOONG.

As of August 2021, 470 mass shootings fit the Mass Shooting Tracker project criterion, leaving 482 people dead and 1,927 injured, for a total of 2,409 total victims, some including the shooter(s).

It kind of makes my point that I cannot remember which mass shootings this applied to, but I remember there was a period I think last year where over the course of a couple of weeks the national press had focused almost all their attention on two mass shootings that had book ended the period. Yet in reality in the time in between there had been 4-5 incidents that met the definition of mass shootings with comparable death tolls to the incidents that were receiving coverage. What we see and read about on the news even here in the US is not representative of the size of the actual problem.

Much like stories about missing women tend to only focus on women of a certain profile, national media attention of a mass shooting tend to pick and choose which incidents get their focus.

Oh yes, that is becoming very apparent after the recent disappearance and death of an affluent blonde white girl from New York and her Florida boyfriend going walkabout…

That list is insane. I would imagine only the “major ones” get reported as far as the UK.

To think there have been more mass shootings in the USA this year than there are days of the year is insane.

It’s a good country, love visiting but I would hate to be from a country with a gun culture like that
