'Clear and obvious wrong' Referee decisions - possible title decider

Have you considered that when the line comes out that ‘they are both high’, it’s not actually referring to Doku and Mac Allister, but the two hapless pricks refereeing the game?

He is particularly an odd one.

He also works for City as a side gig.

it actually furthers his point…

‘they’re both high’…(in the context he means it, not the jokey drug high)

how the hell is McCallister high? is there an explanation for that?

i cant agree more with Limie here, hes not even explaining the situation…he claims they are both high, and Doku gets ball first…neither are true…surely even Mikey fucking Owen can challenge that?

Like i said earlier, dudes (PGMOL) need to know when to stop digging.

I actually have no problem with the technology being used as part of VAR or its accuracy. Working in the data field, I understand that it’s not even possible to have 100% accurate data and so I’m happy that we work within the parameters of what data accuracy the technology can deliver at this point (see the OTT reaction to the offside lines which I never agreed was a valid argument)

It’s the implementation and protocols (read: the inconsistent following of) in relation to the technology which is absolutely faarked. The technology works fine, but the referees have built walls to ensure that the technology is not used to the best of its ability, in the name of ‘not re-refereeing’ the game.

Yet the protocols in place are pretty much never consistent game by game. We can have two almost identical situations and VAR can decide to intervene or not. And it’s the haphazard manner in which the VAR are making those decisions that’s really fucking grating me.

I think it’s fair to say that @Limiescouse and I and others would get cast as referee defenders - I obviously have a more positive view on this in that I believe I take a more measured and non-emotional stance on a situation :woman_shrugging: (repeating, I work in data where it’s my job to ensure I don’t provide colour or bias to data - I am merely delivering information from the data available) -but I think this season has been a bridge too far even for many of us.

Notice how in each of these VAR audios there is always one voice in the room that at least wants to ensure that the right decision is arrived at? Some tech almost pleading in the Diaz offside “are you sure are you sure?”. Even this Doku audio there is someone asking whether they are sure they are happy with the decision? Notice how it’s often some VAR assistant or tech that is given no power in the decision-making process? Their voice in that room is not considered. I feel like VARS basically become the equivalent of Keyboard Warriors: easy to have strong opinions about something without any afterthought when they can hide behind a screen. And a massive ego which restricts them from even contemplating that there’s someone else in the room that might actually have a more balanced opinion on a situation in front of them. If I actually heard a transcript where a VAR said they not sure or there was some form of uncertainty i’d actually applaud them because it would suggest they are human. Instead they are walking into potential title deciding situations and with their unchecked ego aren’t even capable of second guessing that they are not just making the right call, or even following the correct protocol.

Look at the Doku audio transcripts. It’s like they are racing against an egg timer which makes them rush their decision making far too much. Why the fucking rush? Especially if you have fucking terrible initial refereeing instincts?

I don’t really have anything against Oliver in this situation. I know we see constantly his links to the Abu Dhabi league, but I can understand how an on-field ref could hesitate in the moment on making such a call so late in the match, and his view may not even have been the best. My beef is 100% with the VAR keyboard warriors that are consistently failing in their duty in ensuring refereeing standards are at least at the baseline.

And the biggest cunt this week must be Michael Owen. Opened up with the line about how opinion is split on this decision giving Webb an easy out to defend the decision making this way " oh it’s one that could have gone either way"…FUCK OFF. The only way opinion is split is neutrals enjoying the moment to troll Liverpool again. No-one with their anti Liverpool cap off could ever consider that the correct call.

Fuck I’m still dirty with that decision. Certainly moreso with every re-watch of that VAR audio. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I am starting to wonder weather the refs are deliberately using and misusing VAR in the hope that fans will turn against it and have it scrapped.

I think it was telling that they opposed the semi-automated offside software because if that works (and, from what I’ve seen, it works well) then there will be demand for other automation.

Can you imagine AI refereeing? Largely accurate, consistent and free from bias. Also, once implemented, cheap. It’s PGMOL’s worst nightmare.

I thought that’s what we already had.

Artificial Intelligence? Not sure where the second bit enters into it.

Wasn’t it clear from the start?

I flip the script around and wonder, what if we were defending in the box, and Gakpo goes in high on Rodri like that?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d be wondering how we got away with that.

It would be penalty , 100%.

This is my biggest concern.

I have been thinking about that recently. I think we headed in that direction to be honest.

Not unless you can find a way to get ground truth revaluations, i.e. some way to decide conclusively what the right decision in each situation in your training set is. Otherwise, if you’re using existing games and decisions as your dataset, you’re just replicating the bias.

I would guess it would be a case of training the system on neutral games in another league. You would also presumably have to have some sort of fallback for “clear and obvious errors”!

A bit of humour from Tomkins:

The actual VAR recording is almost beyond parody. “Macallister is coming into his space”. What the fuck does that mean in a contact sport?
