Climate Catastrophe

I’ll be in Australia from September.

I’ve never been scared of summer before

36° C here right now, with quite some humidity in the air…

Hot, but during the night, it doesn’t get colder than 22-23 degrees C. That’s the hardest part of it as far as I’m concerned.

I forget, where are you? That is crazy warm for most of Switzerland, I remember my Geneva colleagues wilting at around 28C

Yeah mine had hit 39 before.

I urge that these people taking a swim in a lake seek a cold shower instead. It will save lives and frankly was a dream about an hour ago.

In my previous post I forgot something very important. I haven’t seen the demographics of these drownings. However one thing that happens in France from about mid June is the BAC and other exams. Essentially the way this is organised means masses of adolescents are basically on holiday and more importantly unsupervised. They do silly things particularly if the weather is nice.
Their parents are at work and they are left to their own. Often going out and about which in these heat wave conditions causes multiple problems. Dehydration due to not taking enough or any fluids with them, inattention as they are in groups of friends and as mentioned before lack of education.

Roughly an hour away from Geneva, in the vicinity of Lausanne. Geneva is the hottest spot right now, with temperatures reaching 37°C. Yeah, it’s quite hot for the time being.

40° forecast in Berlin on Saturday. I’ve never heard of that before.
Thank God we’ll be in London!

It’s 33 degrees here in Northern Germany today, and it’s supposed to stay that way—or get even worse—until Sunday. Did I mention I live in an attic apartment? :face_with_spiral_eyes::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Unfortunately not; that would be great. :slightly_smiling_face:

I see that France has shut down a couple of reactors to avoid putting heated water into already overheating rivers. Summer peaks for now are well below winter peaks, but I have to think window air conditioners are going to be increasingly common - a friend has a place in Paris, and right now they are basically living in one room where they have one.

Interesting conversation here about that issue

It’s interesting that when here the whole town suffered it’s power cuts it was at around 17hr30 and 19hr30. This coincides with when the majority of people get home from work.
I’d hazard the turning and plugging things on could cause massive problems (our supply system isn’t designed for electric cars and water heating). I mention water heating as more and more heat water with electricity these days and in this heat I’m sure one of the first things people do when at home is take a shower.
The old infrastructure here just can not cope.

Placing a few bowls of cold water around the room might help @Livvy - It is known to cool the surrounding areas a touch :+1:

I have—even with ice cubes in front of the fan right now.

Seriously tempted to look at a small portable AC unit.

Research time. Expected to cool here a bit tomorrow and into next week but it’s not going to be the last time this happens.

Definitely go for the window type over the portable/room type if at all possible. Window-mounts are quite a bit more efficient, and expel their waste heat outside the building shell.

Thanks, much appreciated. I might see if I can find one that will double up for use in my van but for the house. It’s properly uncomfortable this evening.
