Climate Catastrophe

yep you’re right. That was today’s job but I’m working from home these days and I don’t think I have any other site visits this week. So compared to 2 years ago my weekly mileage is way down. Hence my comment on the pandemic being an opportunity missed.

Could, but won’t. One of the things that really pisses me off is companies forcing back employees who have been working from home perfectly adequately for the last seventeen months.

The problem is that people are not willing to make the sacrifices today to ensure the wellbeing of those that follow tomorrow.

Imagine saying to individuals “Right give us your mobile phone and car keys - you cannot use them anymore”

It’s not realistically ever going to happen.

It is estimated that a million engines start worldwide every minute of every day.

This docco - though flawed on some issues - is well worth the watch - the last five minutes are harrowing.

The bottom line is economics which drives the wrong behaviour. Biotech can fix many of these issues. But they only make sense when oil is greater than $100 dollars a barrel.

Over 30 years ago ICI (north east England) commercialised bioplastics that used waste as a feedstock, and converted it into plastics nature could breakdown. It’s a sad indictment as an example bioplastics are not the norm today.

Organisation’s have sunk billions into infrastructure. Developed pipelines, and optimised within an inch to be most cost effective scaled process. Even when better technologies are invented without legislation change disruption can not occur.

Before I left the UK I invented lots of chemicals from CO2. Sadly they are locked up in a vault and will only be used to stifle competition (prop up old technology).

Leak the formuals on the internet somewhere

Sicily recorded temperatures of 49 degrees (120F) last week. It was so hot that snails were burning in their shells and citrus fruit was almost melting on the trees.

Anyone still not convinced by this climate change science?

So far this summer has been relatively cold, there is always a reaction to that eventually. Last 3-4 days have been infurnal here in the south of France, so much so that 2 days ago I felt pretty unwell.
After such high temperatures will come the sub tropical rain falls with massive lightning attacks.
These big yoyo effects are very much to do with climate change as you point out.

I dont think you’ll find anyone on here with that view but they are out there and there’s more of them than you think.

Fascinating. Still probably 30 years away though :pensive:

Anyone likely to be affected??? Stay safe people. :palms_up_together:

Totally forgot :man_facepalming:

FINALLY, I feel those Extinction Rebellion crazies are starting to get through to me…

I believe that climate is changing, but I also believe that the earth has been in a warming cycle for 10,000 years. the last “Ice Age” lasted from 115,000BC to 10,000BC where earth’s average temperature was somewhere around 7’C to 10’C. Human population would have numbered in the millions at that point and would have had ZERO impact on the earth’s environment.

This planet itself goes through cycles, for which we CANNOT fully understand we haven’t existed long enough to gather that kind of data. Yes, scientists are able to “determine” some aspects of the planet’s history by core samples and data analysis. Yes, I believe that humans are accelerating the warming cycle.

I live in a temperate rainforest. We get heaps of rain here annually, rediculous amounts of it at times. Just had a record dry spell this summer, something like 2 months without rain. hundreds of forest fires throughout the province. Then mother nature threw up a big cloud of hazy smoke, blocked out the sun and temperatures cooled down. now we have two weeks of rain in the middle of summer.

Changes are definitely happening. No question we humans are a driving catalyst of these changes. But I think it will be a looooooong time before we are able to force captialism to take a back seat to the good of our environment and THAT is the problem.

Those fucking extinction rebellion are fucking knobs are do more harm than good IMO

I was actually wondering if there’s any environmental impact from silicone?

Happy to research this for you. Coincidentally, I seem to have made a good start already.
