Sending positive vibes to Cody and family

my thoughts are with him and his family.

its a horrible thing to go through.

I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I hope they find strength to pull through this.

Had a decent performance at the World Cup really.

Few goals and assists when they needed him

"Cody, Cody Gakpooo,
Cody, Cody Gakpooo…"

Started all four Netherlands games with three goals and one assist. Heroic appearance in last game. One of the very top performers in this WC.

Cody Gakpo on the Netherlands’ heartbreaking FIFA World Cup exit to Morocco:

:speaking_head: ā€œThis is one of the hardest nights of my career. We came into this tournament believing we could go all the way, and to leave like this is painful beyond words. We dreamed of bringing joy to our country, but tonight we’re going home with nothing but heartbreak.ā€

ā€œMy goal meant everything to me in that moment, especially because of everything my family and I have been carrying. My partner and I recently lost our baby, and that is a pain no words can truly describe. I carried that grief with me every single day throughout this tournament. I tried to turn that pain into strength for my family, for my teammates and for my country. To experience that loss and then leave the World Cup like this… it hurts in a way I can’t explain.ā€

ā€œI don’t want to take anything away from Morocco because they were outstanding. They fought for every ball, believed until the very end and showed incredible heart. They earned this victory, and I have nothing but respect for them. Sometimes football rewards the team that refuses to stop believing.ā€

ā€œTo the Dutch supporters, I’m sorry we couldn’t give you the ending you deserved. We know how much this team means to you, and we know this defeat will stay with you for a long time. Believe me, nobody feels that pain more than the players sitting in our dressing room tonight.ā€

ā€œI’ll take time to heal, both as a footballer and as a person. Some battles happen on the pitch, others happen far away from the stadium. I’ll keep fighting through both. This tournament has ended in disappointment, but I know one day these painful moments will make me stronger, and when that day comes, I’ll be ready to give everything for the Netherlands again.ā€

Gakpo’s past year:

  • experiencing a personally and collectively shite season with LFC, with the tragic loss of Jota impacting everyone negatively
  • being targeted by many fans as the perfect scapegoat for that shite season
  • before the world cup, losing his to-be-born baby
  • carrying this deep grief throughout the tournament, but still being sharp and brilliant, and scoring three goals
  • scoring the apparent winner for the Netherlands against Morocco, before a last-gasp equalizer. Then going out on penalties
  • going home in a depressed mood

Life is all about highs and lows, and from the latter, Cody got his full share during the last twelve months. Hopefully, the highs will come again, starting after the summer break with a new coach and new hopes. Fingers crossed and all the best!
