Agreed. Not discretionary but a big use (192w = 4.6Kwh per day or 1680 kWh annually) and something to consider when replacing appliances etc.
Apparently the ‘typical’ UK household usage is under about 4,000 kWh annually (seems low to me?) so that fridge of yours would be a big impost for most UK households.
That link is actually in english, not sure why it shows in Latin…
That’s it’s running current. It’s thermostatically controlled so once down to temp, it only needs to pump out the heat it loses. Bet it’s a 1/4 that or less over 24 hours.
It’s placeholder text:
Just looked up on the Currys website and they have a “G” rated fridge-freezer that estimates as 407KWh/year whereas the best "A"rated is 108KWh/year.
Unless the thing is very old or very broken it will be somewhere between those.
Incidentally, this is where a measuring plug can be really useful. That will give you a very good idea as to what, precisely, is using energy over a 24 hour period.
The UK voting population voted for this government. Despite everything that was already known about Johnson and the Conservatives, they preferred to “get Brexit over and done with”.
Don’t count me in that population, I didn’t.
More or less on the market already, although to be honest I don’t recall seeing a configuration that uses a single master. We have some that are hooked up to our wifi.
Refrigerators are often not noticed - it is stunning how much an older refrigerator can consume, you will see nameplate ratings of 500W or more. A modern unit is seldom above 250W.
Up at the lake, we have a (disused) unit from the late 40’s, 1.5 kW!
Bet it goes from ambient to beer’0’clock in no time though
The thing with greater efficiency is that it tends to mean that things are slower, dimmer, cooler, hotter etc and not in a good way. Anybody who grew up in a house with a 100w bulb at the top of the stairs knows exactly what I mean.
Not necessarily. LED lights, for example, are so much brighter for a given wattage: efficiency can mean less consumption without sacrificing brighness.
Not sure that would be the correct re-rating for pints in London, perhaps closer to £50?
For a given wattage yes, but ultimately LED’s have their limits unless they’re arranged en mass.
Aren’t you supposed to hoover the backs of fridges n freezers…to reduce electric consumption.
Airflow around the hot compressor helps - I suppose removing dust contributes here
Nah, this thing must have had spectacular heat loss - though the designers back then had the good sense to put all the powered systems on the top, which it took refrigerator designers about 60 years to get back to doing. Apparently it used to keep the kitchen quite warm.
Looks somewhat like this…
Here’s a good one…making tea/coffee. for 2 people…boil water for 2 cups any left over, have a large flask ready…put excess hot water in…use for washing pots later…
I was what you people would call in the IOT tech domain.
It’s relatively cheap to have a custom made DIY IOT solution which can both automate homes as well as provide substantial energy savings. I know this because i have worked on this solution as a potential product offering for my startup in the past.
All that’s required is a router inserted near the electricity box and a bunch of relays connected to the router and the individual switches. I can give the india pricings which will obviously be much cheaper but I don’t think the pricings will be that exhorbitant elsewhere.
Connect the router over the wifi network and then have an open source free app (which are available) to have both a very minimal home automation system as well as provide a way to regulate energy savings
I don’t even believe you need smart meters for this to be viable and can easily be retrofitted to an existing house.
I have a recent experience on this.
My friend bought a certified 5 star rated refrigerator a while back. But the point was that refrigerator was an old model… And the specifications for the refrigerator changes everytime. What was a 5 star refrigerator where the model was made 2017 might mean it’s sub optimal compared to the recent models which are even 3 star rated in 2018-19
