I cannot believe I’ve found something to agree with you on…
I think “a mountain out of a molehill” is probably the best summary. Was he the standout player? No. But he wasn’t shit either. He did his job, and that’s what we need at the moment. Anything else is a bonus.
His exclusions from the squads are strange lately. Is he injured? I know Jürgen had him for meetings a few weeks back, maybe he hasn’t taken on what was asked and this is some sort of punishment? Hopefully just a small knock though. High hopes for Curtis.
I think that’s an unfortunate phrase to use. If Klopp hadn’t been happy with his performances, he doesn’t take him out as a ‘punishment’ as such. They’ll be working with the analysts and coaches to figure out how and where he can improve his game.
And while it could well be that, it could as easily be that we are ensuring Elliott and Thiago get the minutes they need to get back to full match fitness while also having the strongest possible options on the bench.
He’s 21 and ahead of him currently is Thiago, Henderson, Keita… Two of which are 30+… I expect Elliot will have similar periods of being “dropped” as he grows into replacing the current 1st team players. So it’s no big deal he’s currently out of the match day squad.
Elliot/Henderson are a prime example that Elliot despite all his talent and promise has improvements to make and Henderson still has a lot to offer.
Just bloody brilliant we finally have some serious squad depth.
I think it’s more of the fact that he’s still relatively young and has started our last couple of games. Last week it was Gomez and Origi, this game it was Jones.
On the weekend it’ll be someone else. I’m celebrating this in all honesty, it means that we can actually put out the team we want to rather than the team we have to.
It’s basically the same as we had since the start of the season (we now have Diaz), and not to far off what we had last season. The only real difference is that coming into this game everyone was pretty much fit.
Yeah our depth issues aren’t about how many players we have. Main issue is how many players of similar roles are injury prone. Secondary issue is about tactical fit, a couple don’t really offer what we need them to. Third but nowadays quite minor is quality, Origi always seems to score but not great at the rest, similar with Minamino, right back cover options nobody is anywhere near Trents level. But our depth now is better than its ever been.
Perhaps just for him to become more balanced, so he can be a proper central midfielder. He’s got decent size, shields the ball well, pretty good ball control. I don’t think we’ll want to “kill” his natural strengths and instincts, but just not let him rely only on that offensive sentiment.
I’ve always felt this is part of the natural process as Klopp moulds him into a midfielder for Liverpool. Rounding off the defensive and control elements of his game, and refining his natural game.
As talented as he was in the youth, he was always going to have to add something to his game to really establish himself at this level. If you don’t directly contribute to a lot of goals, you’ve got to add some structure, and he didnt really do the former. That too can be learned, but the Silvas are City really are the model for what he should be trying to develop into (hopefully more the Spanish one than the twat one).
