Curtis JONES: 2025/26

So you did!

I just saw a comment from someone on instagram saying they ā€œdon’t see Jones becoming the new Gerrard so I would sell himā€ and it reminded me that there is a reason McDonalds coffee has a warning on it that the contents might be hot.

I don’t see him going this summer. We need a local core — we need homegrown players at the very least, and we aren’t exactly blessed in that department

We should keep him and I want to keep him. The only way we might sell is if he is up for it, we consider the fee as all profit, and we put the dough against another homegrown midfielder such as Wharton or Anderson.

But for me, even if we are getting someone like the two mentioned, there is plenty of room for Jones and I hope he signs a new deal.

Curtis should be kept but under a new manager, that will give him a chance, hopefully to shine. As with others under Slot he has had little chance.

Curtis isn’t perfect, but he is the one that I trust to keep possession better than any other player we have at the moment and for me he should have been used this year far more than Macca & Grav.

Jones apparently would like to stay if he was ā€œthe main man.ā€

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2026/04/curtis-jones-liverpool-transfer-inter-milan-update-2026/

I’m assuming that means that he wants to be a regular starter, rather than the ā€œmain manā€ in the way I would traditionally understand it (an undroppable member of the starting XI, ala Virgil or Szobo or Alisson or peak Mo).

If it’s the former - I can see his frustration. I think he’s been excellent at RB in the last two matches, but my guess is that he wants to play in the midfield. I’m just not sure he makes it into a midfield three ahead of Szobo/Wirtz/Grav. Especially if we add Anderson and/or Wharton this summer.

I’d love to keep him as a squad player for rotation purposes, giving him regular minutes without making him a guaranteed starter. His ball control, dribbling, and passing have always been very good. He also brings a certain type of arrogance and confidence and Scouser pride that I love to see, even if it doesn’t always serve him well on the pitch. He’s versatile enough to play all around the midfield, at RB, and as a forward (in a pinch), so he’s useful and a valuable squad player.

But the truth is, if he expects to be undroppable, he can go play for a lesser club because he’s not good enough to displace any of our regulars permanently.

I personally don’t think he would accept the idea of potentially become a permanent RB option here. I don’t even think that’s our plan, either. Very interesting one to follow this summer. I’d like him to stay, but not at any ā€œcostā€.

He’s much better than Gravenberch.
He should have had more game time this season. So wanting more minutes isn’t a surprise.
I don’t think it’s even about being a midfield shoe in, just playing minutes in the midfield.
I feel it’s poor squad management particularly in rotation. This was mentioned last season so isn’t a surprise (Harvey looked for a way out and went).
We will end up having the small squad Slot likes and noone to fill the home grown status.

What I’d take from any move by Jones to leave is that Slot is staying!

I’ve always liked Curtis, and defended him against the body of opinion that has wanted rid of him over the last few years.

But the lad has shown absolutely nothing to suggest he should be a first name in Liverpool’s first team (where we want to be, not so much this season). If Jones is the fourth player for a three man midfield, we’re doing really well.

I suspect that Jones has a high enough opinion of himself to believe he should be weighed in to the save level as the money that has just been put on Gravenberch, and will likely be needed to secure Szobozslai. In which case I think he’ll leave.

I think he should’ve played more this season considering Mac’s form for big parts of this season and that it is Jones’ best position in this formation. Sometimes maybe even instead of Gravenberch (who started the season well, but also had issues with time). I don’t think it’s only about money, but having a more important role. And perhaps when he takes everything into account, he’d be open for a new challenge (even if it means being in the same position as he’s now here, but with a better chance to become that starting XI player).

He is definitely good enough for a 4 into 3 situation, and I agree he should have played more this season.

If he sees himself as more than a 4 into 3 man, then I do think there will be a departure. If a new manager is coming he might want to see how he fares in the shake up.

If he does go the need for homegrown intensifies, and I think that would make Adam Wharton quite likely.

He has been better than both Macca and Grav this year.

One of our problems 8s keeping possession and another is passing through the 3rds of the pitch and his stats for progressive passes are excellent.

Id keep him. Probably be the last of our midfielders I“d sell.

He“s quite versatile, not on a high wage and homegrown. I“d actually put him back in midfield and tell him to keep picking out Wirtz like he was before.

Obviously id“sign better midfielders in the summer but as a backup he“s a good option.

Like him to stay, at least get a look in under a possible new manager first.
Given Slots tendency to use the same old faces,if Slot stays, he may as well go, he has shown enough to be given time under someone else.

Why didn’t Slot play the Jones - Szobo double pivot like against Fulham again? It was by far our best midfield performance over the past 2 months.
