If Jones of all people is one of the best performers then we are in deep shit. Fortunately, the international break has come to buy us time.

If Jones had started yesterday instead of Mac we might have won that game.

Did a pretty good recycling job, which was what we needed. Not every pass needs to be a Hollywood final ball. Although the game was still wilder than we would want it to be. But there were some improvements, once we got past a poor start to the game.

At one point last night, I actually felt proud that he was a Liverpool player - and he looked like a proper, “pass-and-move” Liverpool player of old - so it was inevitable he would get injured pretty quickly, just when I thought he’d be over his fitness issues.

I struggle to think of one player in this Liverpool squad who loves having the ball so much and who always, especially during this dark times, pops up wherever he’s needed to receive it, allay the pressure off the back line and start building the attack. I said that this would all get much worse before it got better but I had him in mind as one of the reasons why he would get better. Without him, I’m afraid that this team is screwed.

He has been one of the few that can come out with good performances in our run of losses. Underrated.

Not by me, he does struggle to accelerate the game however we have other players, Szoboszlai and Wirtz for example, who can.
Another problem is his defending however he puts in an effort and isn’t the worst in this respect.

No players can do everything, what’s important is he is very good at what he needs to do and imposes himself in games, making himself relevant

Jones is a very basic player, every season he plays is a carbon copy of the standards he set the season before, played well yesterday but if even half the squad played to the level we know they’re capable of, he doesn’t even get a mention.

He’s been on the scene longer than Wharton, Gibbs White, Anderson, Miley, Ayari, Bergvall and they’ve surpassed him.

Overrated, underrated… it’s impossible to know really. Who cares. My feeling is that he’s generally rated as his quality deserves to be rated.

Of course that he can look better with his ability to keep the ball in a team that looks disconnected and wild.

Then when things are fine, you’ll get the old “takes too many touches on the ball” shouts.

Surpassed him how? He’s been, on merit, a valued member of PL- and cup-winning sides during one of the tightest contested PL eras - which all of these combined, bar Wharton, didn’t even get close to. I get that grass is greener on the other side but I genuinely can’t fathom the lack of respect he gets from his own fanbase. He’d walk into any of these sides, regardless of their playing style.

Okay, so, he looks good because others especially Macca have become so bad. That’s it.
