I am still a supporter of the club of course and want it to do well and it still gives me pleasure when they do. However I can’t say I feel engaged with the players any more. Perhaps it is an age thing. As a kid I had my heroes such as St John, Hunt and Yeats and then in my late teens and twenties I could relate more to the players because they were my age group, such as Keegan, Dalglish, etc. I lost interest a bit in my 30s and 40s and gave up going which made it hard to get back into it…
I have said it before but I find it very hard to relate to the foreign mercenaries which largely populate the Premier League now and can’t understand why we don’t bring through the same number of local and British lads and it seems that any British and particularly english lads get far more stick and abuse from fans and particularly on social media..
I know you certainly didn’t but I found I could relate far more to the lads playing for England in the World Cup than any recent Liverpool teams or players. I shared their triumphs and their ultimate failure hurt me more as they seemed such a decent and united group of players.
Also the players in the 60s and 70s lived in our communities. I used to know where most of them lived. You saw them at the shops, post office, school gates, petrol station. They are now holed up behind 8ft high walls and electric gates with security lights all round.
Ray Clemence’s old house is up for sale at the moment. Mind you it has been extended quite a bit since he was there. Emlyn Hughes lived just further down the road and used to frequent the Railway pub…

A lot are mercenaries for sure. But we’ve had some great foreign players who I feel really bought into the club/city and saw it as an honour to play for us.
Craig Johnston was one of the older ones who stood out. I think Tsimikas is the same. Endo too. The likes of Bobby Firmino, Dirk Kuyt, Dan Agger and Sami Hyypia were the same.
I started losing respect for some of our lads towards the end of Slot’s first season when everyone started acting like Big-time Charlie’s after the title was won. I feel things have gone downhill since then.
just as an aside, I used to work with a girl who was Ray’s girlfriend in the early 70’s. She told me about some of the party’s the players had. nothing sordid or anything. The most interesting thing she told me was Brian Moore, the commentator, used to turn up for them. There must have been a reason why but she never disclosed it.
She also told me Ian Callaghan was a cunt!

I can relate a story about Ray when I overheard a conversation he was having in the pub shortly before he left rather suddenly…it pretty much confirmed the rumours at the time.
Regardless if what Jones was pissed off about (I think it was the armband), the way he acted, on the field, is not a good look. He needs to control his behaviour.
His liking of the tweet linking him to Inter was daft too.

He’s “special”
I feel the same as Rambler and Jaffod, and have done since Klopp left. Have lived it vicariously through my son but personally don’t feel much of a connection to any of the current lot bar Virg, Ali, Gomez and Bradley.
I think a lot of the love for recent teams was through the sheer force and personality of Jurgen. Hopefully Iraola can foster a similar connection between the staff, players and fans
He posted a picture of him and Szoboszlai smiling together at training, which seems pretty pointed to be saying everything is fine now.
