There isn’t an emoji to capture that one. What an incredible collapse of value. Four years ago as a young player he was worth £73M, now when he should be approaching his peak years he isn’t worth a third of that. His decision to go to ManU destroyed his career
Was he though? Utd paid that for him, but for as well as he did in Germany, there wasn’t that much other real interest in him at the price Dortmund was demanding.
They felt a bit burned after missing out on him when he left City and their continued interest in him, even when he was not what anyone else thought that side really needed to add at that time, always felt Utd wanting to show the market they are still powerful enough to land their man than one made on real footballing grounds. And those former deals (see Neymar to PSG, or Phil to Barca) are the ones that tend to come with inflated fees.
Fair enough, they may have paid too much. But I don’t think there is much question that most clubs in the PL would have jumped at the chance to sign him for somewhere considerably north of £25M
It was moving back to England at all that destroyed him. He’s been known to pal around with people who are not positive influences on his life. People he was able to seperate himself in Germany.
United identified him as a player who was at his most comfortable on the left, but wouldn’t play him there because of Rashford. They then bought Ronaldo later in the same window and were very quickly forced to drop any pretense of playing the same sort of high energy football Dortmund played that they had been trying to work towards
I didn’t mean to imply that he was not a proper talent. But Utd had a very confused idea of what they wanted at the time and so the intensity of their interest in him was as much to address perceived reputational damage of missing out on him the first time as it was a footballing one. That is why they were willing to meet such high financial demands of the overall package to get it done, one that almost certainly over inflated his value, despite note having a clear idea of what their football with him was going to look like.
Still, he was very handsomely paid. Hopefully he has been smart about what he’s done with it.
Sancho at the time was attracting interest also because he had the ability to play both sides and use both feet. If he played on the right, he could come in even on his left. A little bit like the opposite Dembele.
Based on the following, I wouldn’t risk him: (has Keita vibes all over again)
Romeo Lavia is not only a player who gets injured a lot, he’s also a player who seems to get mysterious interminable problems which are hard to put a date on. Last season we were constantly seeing his return date pushed back until the club finally gave up and shut him down for the season. That extended break didn’t do him much good – he’s been in and out of the team all year in his second campaign at Chelsea too, and this latest issue he’s picked up has now been dragging on in a similar fashion.
We never seem to get a straight answer on what’s wrong with him or when he will be back. Today, Enzo Maresca was asked for an update: “No [there is no update]. Romeo is still in the process to come back but there’s still a long way to go.”
That really gives us no clue. Lavia was taken off at half time of our win over Spurs two months ago, and then returned to play 45 minutes in the FA Cup at the start of January. That seemed to go well and he played against Bournemouth a few days later, only to go off in the second half of that game too.
We thought it was a question of easing him back into action, but after Lavia missed the next game against Wolves entirely, Maresca [explained he had a new issue]
“Muscular problems, muscle issues” was the only update we got. Since then… nothing until today. This is presumably a continuation of that problem – but was this problem a continuation of the issue from December?
The whole thing is immensely frustrating, and we’d appreciate at least a little more clarity on what’s up.
