Nunez won the header - not sure any of our other attackers could have done that. Then he won the loose ball and got it under control. Then he played a lovely composed pass to Elliott, perfectly weighted so Elliott could hit it first time - which is why it beat the goalie, as he wasnāt fully set yet, so he was only able to get a weak hand on it.
We all know the score with Nunez, and none of us will be surprised if he goes in summer and Slot brings another striker in. In the meantime, some big moments on the way to big trophies would be just the ticket. Well done that lad.
Darwin carries the tag of only being able to deliver when he doesnāt have time to think, which I think is not only wrong and unfair but actually the opposite of when he tends to deliver. He is volatile and can be wild and as a result is often more succesful when he is able to take a breath and compose himself. Think how much time he had to confuse himself with both of those finishes against Newcastle, but that was arguably the best 5 mins of his liverpool career. That goal yesterday, with the way he not only avoided the temptation to just twat it, but delayed the eventual pass the perfect amount for Harvey to be able to catch up and hit it in stride, is a good illustration of what the good Darwin can do. Its just a shame we dont see enough of it.
We can only focus on how good he is for us, the rest is not our business. Many variables decide on that. Who knows where he goes and how well he does. Itās not always the first clubās fault if a player moves on for different reasons and does better elsewhere. People have to make decisions and at certain times, also depending on the player side, the market, etc.
Interestingly it came just a few minutes after he completely quit on Salahās bad pass. I was annoyed at the time as he wasnāt that far away and the defender still had to deal with it but instead of pressuring him he just stopped and I believe threw his hands in the air.
Then suddenly he is beating Marquinhos in the air, and playing in Elliott.
Shows the issue with him we have. He has some skills we value such as that ability to beat a top CB that none of our other forwards do but at the same time I thought he was again generally pretty out of control during his cameo.
I donāt think heās shown enough this season and will move on but I think we need to replace that physicality.
Even if Nunez scores the winning goal in CL final , he still should be on his way out.
Heās half way there to being a folk hero for Liverpool just like Origi was. Any other further contributions would only cement that.
But any decent price that we get for him , he should be moved on. Love him. Heās got a lot of attributes that we want from a CF. But it just hasnāt clicked for him and for us.
I think he performs best when his brain is uncluttered. With Liverpool and the other forwards who rightfully demand the ball, someone like Darwin in this case often makes wrong decisions.
Heāll work best in situations where thereās a second striker playing behind him. Unfortunately, we donāt play with that system.
Also , do think the wide forward dominated system in modern football doesnāt work for players like Nunez. Heās at his best when heās got his back to the goal. Recieve the ball and then play the game. We just donāt do that enough.
A lot of his other gameplay w.r.t his workrate etc is really good. Unfortunately, it doesnāt translate to goals and assists. And the chances that he does get , he just canāt keep his head and ends up overcomplicating factors.
I do think Liverpool getting a dedicated striker coach would have helped in that regard. Maybe someone like Henry or even Torres. But thatās not a decision that can be made for Nunez now. Itās similar to Alisson insisting Taffarel to be signed. Taffarel is a world class keeper in his own right and his inputs not only allowed Alisson to improve but also rubbed down to Kelleher and quite possibly Jaros as well.
We changed our shape under Slot and before he had wide forwards around him, now the nearest player to him is a #10/second striker. Mostly Szobo/Jones, sometimes Jota. That in theory should be helpful for him (less pressure to link the game, but be a proper #9), but obviously there is no improvement.
Heās been a much better player for us the Divok was overall. And had a few glorious moments like PSG (and the short handed brace against Newcastle) that mean I will always have a bit of love for him in my heart.
But the large fee paid means different expectations. Itās really really hard for an expensive player to be a folk hero. All a little unfair to the player, but the reality of the universe.
