Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

I dont agree with a lot @dioufgates says, and especially in the way he usually says it. But I really hope he is getting something positive out of this election race even though he doesn’t like Biden or Harris.

I have a question, do the Bidens have to sleep in WH in the same bedroom where the Trumps also slept? I mean, how do they get rid of his “karma” in private rooms?

He is a Catholic. I am sure the Vatican can provide what he needs if he asks nicely in private.

I’d be more worried about the smell…

I actually understand many of his frustrations, but hope the same. I’m relieved at the result, but once January comes the hard work begins. There are many constituencies that have gone unheard and need help. I’m not sure yet, but I hope this time they get it. There have been too many empty promises and callous inactions. Time to really help people.

I understand it too, but I can’t ever understand how one does not vote against Trump, so I have an intellectual and emotional problem with that and it will be some time before I can fully digest that people just didn’t vote against Trump despite knowing how awful he was. The election was the most important in recent history anywhere on earth and many Americans contributed to only a narrow defeat for Trump. I have issues. The world had been a much better place today if the Biden win was a landslide. GOP would have needed to change.

Sigh, thinking about this just made me very sad and depressed. I think I am going to watch some football. Southampton is on pretty soon…

Take care, guys…

I have no problem doing so with his actions in the last few days is very much of that, remain in power at any cost even calling for the Supreme Court to aid him as well asking several questionable groups on stand by.

Fascism didn’t start in the gas chambers, it starts by delegitimisation of the very state apparatus that exists to allow a democracy to function. You need to remove Nazism from Fascism, Trump is not Hitler and his actions don’t bare comparison at this time but he is acting like a tyrant and very much in the form of fascists who have led throughout the centuries.

The Democrats really wield a double edged sword. Being a big tent party provides you big opportunities because your natural coalition is so large. The problem is, coalitions are harder to keep happy than when you are playing to just one constituency as the GOP do. Politics isn’t quite zero sum, but there is a reality that you cannot be everything to everyone in a coalition of only partially aligned groups. It is therefore natural that those who are perceived to not get the focus that other parts of the coalition do become alienated and even antagonistic. However, despite running on a platform that in historical context is incredibly progressive, he downplayed the more progressive current element of the party. He made this theory of the case and was proven correct, and there surely has to be a concession to that fact.

However, that isnt a signal to just give up if you’re a progressive. Importantly, there are people in the progressive caucus that he owes - incredible turn out efforts in key states from Talib and Omar. AOC was a fantastically impressive, compelling and loyal surrogate from that side of the party. He is also nothing if not amendable to a good argument. So now is the fork in the road. You either jump on board and be productive, trying to scratch out wins where you can get them, or you can get unproductively angry that youre not seeing the change you want from a system that simply isnt designed to achieve that rate of change even from people who want to deliver it.

I’d wager Melania hasn’t let him karma for a long, long time.

And tbh, I’m not sure he can.

The best thing about this is how upset it will make his supporters.

Fantastic, sir. So well said.

I do hope AOC is all over Biden after he gets his 24 hours of celebration. I worry about him diminishing the progressive movement because he now owes some conservatives. And she has to, as you do aptly described, constructively insert her agenda into this country’s future. I believe AOC has shown incredible maturity through the last few months. She could be a giant for our nation some day.

By the way, I’m a huge fan of Katie Porter too. Don’t feel her brilliance gets the attention it deserves.

I saw that. I’m never leaving home again. You want to come over?

Sure.

But only if there are chumbychoombas, or whatever you call them.

I don’t think there is a bigger disconnect in American politics than the way the American right (and those who don’t pay attention and so only hear what other people say) portray her and the way she actually conducts herself and the talent and intellect she continually demonstrates. She is an astoundingly impressive person and politician.

Porter has been impressive as well, but for AOC to be so laser focused on what she’s trying to achieve politically and do so with such poise in the face of such mysogonistic vitriol is astounding.
