Wow. SoD Miller is saying he did not call out DC National Guard, because they would have been under Trump’s authority. This might be a 25th amendment precursor.

Republicans about to just blame all this on Antifa/BLM and say some crazy shit like “Given the recent attacks on our democracy we cannot allow a transfer of power at such a precarious moment”

Freedom of religion?
Didn’t trump have a problem with the Muslim Congresswomen.

Mate, can you please elaborate in more words. I understand the gravity, but I am not alone in not understanding all the details. Doesn’t that image say that the National Guard was called out ?
Are they only on stand by waiting for orders ? I thought they had been sent in, or is that only FBI ?

DC is weird in terms of chain of command. National Guard forces technically report to their respective state Governor. DC Guard reports to the President. They activated the VA National Guard I believe likely doing so to avoid giving the trump a military that would legally report directly to him. Federalizing the guard is a very political thing that comes with all sorts of red tape. Using the DC guard would basically not have those safeguards in place. VA Guard keeps him from being fully in control.

Edit: most sources are saying DC guard is activated, but if SecDef did it behind trump’s back I agree with @Arminius that the 25th must be in play here with Pence, Pelosi, and co.

What a day! Woke up to goodish news from Georgia, followed that story for a while, then Trump’s irresponsible speech and McConnell’s surprising one. Was just listening to some predictable speeches in the senate, laughing at Cruz, when BBC showed the pathetic police line being breached and watched appalled as Trumpists ran amok in the Capitol. A couple of hours of mayhem ensued with truly shocking scenes ending with the Democrats taking the senate and the US in disarray. More incredible footage appearing and Trump his usual nasty self despite it all. The US needs strong leadership now or there is a very real danger of civil war.

The SoD did not want to send the DC National Guard, or so he claims, because they would come directly under the authority of the President.

The National Guard you have seen images of are Maryland and Virginia, who are under the authority of the state Governors. DC is not a State, so the Secretary of Defence has direct control over them - and ergo so does the White House.

Having had a conversation with the leaders of both parties in both chambers plus the Vice-President, the SoD has proceeded.

Some hours ago I posted that it feels like watching a very bad movie and not real life.

I am still watching, they added some drama and action though.

They’re just discussing this now on CNN…

Interesting that he was just left out of the ‘loop’, to the extent that he was ever in the loop I guess…

Thank you, both of you, @KY_TNRed and @Arminius . That was not entirely intuitive for me and I didn’t know.

It is not remotely intuitive.

At least my pizza is in the oven and at least I remembered to put extra cheese on. This Dumbfuckery coup of 2021 is so cheesy that extra cheese is needed.

Maybe those in charge knew the tallying was going to continue tonight and the softly softly vibe was to calm the chuds down so that they would move on and allow the process to fire up again.

The thing is, although I want the mob to be punished, I don’t really view them to be the real guilty party here. It enrages me that the manipulators will go free, they are the cause of this, the mob is just people acting like a mob and it is what happens when you lie and manipulate low information people long enough.
It is infuriating that the really guilty party will not get many, many years in prison. The mob isn’t really important in the grand scheme of things :frowning:
